Bong Sao and Body Rotation ?'s

Whats up SiGung,

Good to see that the kwoon's open and operating. I'll be watching out for the pictures when you get them up.

I have few questions:

1) Can Bong Sao be thrown low or should a person just use Gong Sao? Would one be better then the other in a certain situations?

2) Is there any form of body roatation while doing Pak Sao? Or should the power of a Pak Sao come from the shoulder out?

Thanks,

Hello Andrew!

1) Can Bong Sao be thrown low or should a person just use Gong Sao? Would one be better then the other in a certain situations?

Boang sao can be used low, but it is a rare thing! Also boang sao is usually executed with your lead side in an effort to deflect a punch to the head delivered from the same side of the centerline (in other words, you would execute a right boang sao against an opponent's left lead or left cross). Goang sao is normally executed with the rear hand to cover an attack to your inside low corner, usually with a simultaneous chung chuie from your lead hand!

2) Is there any form of body roatation while doing Pak Sao? Or should the power of a Pak Sao come from the shoulder out?

The power in the pak sao comes from a combination of footwork (push shuffle in) and a powerful, piston-like thrusting action of your rear palm. Imagine that you are trying to drive a spike through the opponent's elbow and right into their sternum. That is the line of fire for the pak sao. Much of the power comes from strong triceps, which is why I normally put in extra time at the gym working my triceps!

Hey there Sifu Davis, congrats on your new kwoon I would like to add to his question that from My personal experience during My previous training in the Leung Ting system of Wing Tsun that we did, at times advocate a body rotation of sorts with the Pak-Sao using whats called a Chum Kiu step (inward sidestepping turn) thereby countering Pak-Sao with Pak-Sao. Although, its much more easier to demonstrate than to type or explain. Peace

Sealed shoulder and Pak Sao

April 15 2005, 10:51 AM

Hello Andrew,

Adding to what Sifu Davis said, part of the strength in pak sao comes from proper body structure and learning how to "seal your shoulder" as Joel W "Chihand" and Pat Strong like to describe it. This is something you can learn from Sil lum tao.

Regards,

John M. Drake
