Fight, flight or freeze?

Hi guys

I have some problem, mind problem imo. Today, i had a (fight) at school. Well, in my opponents opinion, it was one but for me not. Heres the situation: it was gym class, at the end some guys started treathing me (the kind that weighs 200+ pounds with the condition of a pig, bigmouth but only in group). Well i insult them back, they try to gather around me with 3 and i take my hands out of my pocket, kinda smiling still being calm. Gym teacher right next to me, they couldnt do nothing and they knew it.
But after class, i knew they would be waiting somewhere. i didnt see them at first, but suddenly one of them surprised me from behind a wall, tried to spit on me but i dodged, he threw a punch at me but i kept blocking, then i just grabbed him protectivly, and pushed him a bit around.
Well im used to something, ive joined some fullcontact style just to get used to sparring and stuff (but with JKD in my mind, i always get surprised by the inefficiency)so i should be allright. I had nothing, i laughed at him for being weak actually, but the problem is: when i rethought the "fight", i could just mark the open spots on it.
While in normal sparring or stuff, i always feel that and attack wide open. This guy, id like to break his nose a few times, but why the hell didnt i attack at that time? Its like i couldnt, i kept defending :s
Is this a normal reaction of adrenaline after a surprise attack or should i have prepared the fight better in my mind or what do you guys think?

You Did The Right Thing!

Hi Joe!

Sounds to me like actually what happened was the best thing that could have happened! You would have ended up hurting this guy for nothing! As it was, you played around and made a fool out of him! The best form of humiliation he could have received! You effortlessly made him look like NOTHING without even hurting him! This proved easily that you are by far the better man! For that I highly commend you! I think this is not really a problem for you, but instead the fact that you instinctively knew that he was no threat to you, so the need to actually FIGHT did not kick in! Good for you! I'll bet if the threat had been there, you would have knocked his block off!

A TEST?

I agree with SiGung about humiliation being the best form of punishment. Most pain goes away over time, but humiliation will linger around.

To add a little to what SiGung said about why you didn't atttack cause the guy posed no threat. When sparring, hitting a person won't get you in trouble. With the crazy ways some schools are run a person will be punished for defending themselves. This might have been the reason you didn't capatilize on the openings epecially since there wasn't a threat. Some say the hardest thing to accomplish is to "master self".

Thanks

Im glad i dont have a problem on this then... Youre quite right on the humiliation though. Well, actually, in surprise i bit on my lip and some blood came out, some guys thought he hit me actually... But the best thing of al, i didnt notice myself until a friend told me.. While blocking his punch, i made him hit himself on his eye! :D

Im still doubting though, if that would be a better humiliation or not, because he and 2 friends (all 3 smoking, no condition at all and only 1 of them has a punch that i actually feel but that one wasnt attacking) treathed me openly and i think the humiliation would be more if i actually knocked him out cold. But well, some classmates thanked me for reacting this way, a teacher heard them talking about it, and that guy wasnt quite famous for his good school results as it was, so, now he gets prohibition from entering the school for the next schoolyear :p
Seemed that a lot of guys hated him...
Well thanks for the advice!
