Dear Sifu Lamar,

What should one do if the adversary is a member of law enforcement and is picking a fight with you? Shoul one stand there and get hit or defend. Knowing that figting back against law enforcement can get the average citizen time?

Difficult Question

May 9 2006, 10:27 AM

My first question would be this: Why would anyone put themselves in a position where a law enforcement officer would be trying to start something with them in the first place? As for myself in that situation, I would know in my own heart that I did nothing to provoke such a thing, so I would do WHATEVER necessary to get myself out of harm's way! That would include dropping the officer if I had to! That's just me though! Someone else may react totally differently!

If that officer is in uniform get the badge number and report them and complain like crazy til something is done ie... threaten with a law suit; if you honestly feel threatened do not just file charges swear out a warrant. Out of uniform have a witness and defend yourself. If this was just a one time thing then I would say that that "officer" was just being an ass. Most officers will conduct themselves in a very professional manner as they know that they can be sued personnaly for action both in and out of uniform. But as in everything and every profession you have those that have a little bit of authority and abuse it. Stay clear of that "officer" and seek legal council. I am a former law enforcement officer.
