Hello Sifu Davis,I read your response to my Favorite JKD books.I'm Mike Sheng and i found your book to be very informative,It reminds me alot of Bruce Lee's Fighting Methods Vol 1 with the situational street self-defense.I can't wait for your next books to come out,I will definitely buy them.As far as Jessie Glover's book Bruce Lee Between Wing Chun and JKD,That is one of the most intense books that i'd read on Bruce Lee and there is a lot of things about his early training methods that i found to be a big help to me.I know that you have trained with Pat Strong and i have a couple of videos of him interview Sifu Hawkins Chueng,In that video Sifu Chueng said that Bruce had mention to him that JKD was Pak Sao and Hip and that a lot of people who do Wing Chun and JKD only think that Pak Sao means only to slap but also to Intercept as well. What are your thoughts on this? Not to put you on the spot. This is something that i've been working on since i hear this and i went back and watched that scene from " Enter The Dragon with Bob Wall.Bruce did'nt Pak the way that i learned to Pak(not saying that i or anyone else is doing it wrong)But i was noticing how Bruce used his torque from his hips and legs to explode into his Pak/hit.I thought to myself that the only other person that i knew of that moved his hips that way was Sifu Steve Golden, not Guru Dan and not Vunak (not saying they're wrong)I was looking at the old BLEF video where Steve was demostrating Trapping and notice the body mechanics that he was doing and he looked a lot like Bruce in that respect.Thank you for having me on your forum. Mike Sheng

Hello Mike!

Welcome to the forum! I sincerely hope that you will visit here and post often! In response to your comments regarding Bruce Lee's movement with the pak sao da in Enter The Dragon, that was what we refer to as a "speed pak". In other words, just a very fast trap used to remove an obstruction from the line, combined with a very fast hand technique such as the qua chuie used by Bruce Lee in that sequence. I too noticed (long ago when I first saw "Enter") that Bruce used his waist and hips with the pak/strike. Bruce Lee was a master of body mechanics! We can only hope to achieve that kind of mastery over our bodies one day!

I have read the four part series with Hawkins Cheung that was published in Inside Kung Fu magazine many times. That is where he first mentioned "pak sao and hip". I felt that the things he had to say were inportant enough to include in my manual that my Instructors/Instructor Trainees get when they join my organization, so all four parts of the article are there word for word. There is much good information there as to what Bruce Lee really wanted Jeet Kune Do to be! I also have the three videos that Hawkins released. Although they are interesting, I wish they were less talk, more show, if you know what I mean! I enjoy learning about peoples ideas and the history of things, but I am more of a "learn by watching and doing" kind of person! I will have to say though that some of the most important things that I have ever learned about Jun Fan Gung Fu and Jeet Kune Do were during quiet conversations with First Generation students of Bruce Lee!

Once again, welcome to the forum! I hope we will see a lot from you on here! My personal best to you always!

Keep Blasting!

I also learn by watching people, the very little things that they do.The raising of their heels to turning the waist, hips even the expression on their face.its more like (Why does it work like this.)then its (Thats Why!)when he turns or moves that way he get power etc.I'm quiet by nature anyway, but good observation skills. That got me in trouble with my Shaolin Teacher 'learning things that i was'nt suppose to learn.'Once i see it i got it.Now lets put in the flight time.I've seen you a few times at the old Bruce Lee/Brandon Lee Banquets in the late 90's and 2000.I did'nt go to one in Amsterdam then i heard that John Little had quit and John and i were really cool we met on the elevator talking about Bruce's Marcy machine and how i bought a Pro 95 weightlifting machine and we became fast friends from that moment on.I was really upset that he had left.My last time among the BLEF was in 2000 i took a student of mine there (in Vegas)and he was from Hong Kong and i wanted to introduce him to Lewis Luk because my student was gratuating college and wanted to continue his training.Well Sifu Luk and Sifu Ted Wong like what Pak had from me and wanted to teach him and get him ready for the 2008 Games in Beijing,Pak told me about it and i said jokingly (You Lucky Bastard,Go for it)as far as i know we all have a JKD man going in the 2008 Games in the San Shou division.look for Chow Pak Shing or Man Shing he changed his name since then.
