Hey sifu davis

i've been reading teri tom's book on the straight lead. she says in a correct stance the lead elbow is rested on the body so that the deltoids do not get tired. i thought to myself "i've never noticed that" and tried to find a picture of bruce doing that. what i found was that his lead elbow is always about an inch or two away from his body. what's the deal?

Hello Wei Lin!

That book has some good things in it, but also many things that should be ignored! The proper bai jong emphasizes the immoveable elbow theory from Wing Chun Gung Fu! The lead elbow stays about a fist's distance from the body at all times. This places the lead hand slightly closer to the opponent for even greater non telegraphic striking capability, and also places you in a position where your lead hand/arm is less likely to be trapped or pinned to your body! See my post below to better understand why I feel the way I do about what certain "other" JKD groups are doing with Bruce Lee's art!
