I notice in some JKD books it is very strictly emphasized that when the lead punch is out the rear hand needs to be protecting the chin (as in kickboxing). do you think that it is that important? i see in ur jun fan/jkd streetfighting book you don't really do that, nor did bruce in any of his pictures.

Rear Guard

June 19 2006, 3:38 PM

Hello Wei Lin!

I don't know where that notion came from! That IS NOT the way that Bruce Lee taught, nor should it be the way his art is taught to others! The guard hand is below the chin and inside the lead shoulder, right on the centerline! The position can fluctuate as needed during striking, but should stay on center BELOW THE CHIN ... NOT beside the jaw, until needed elsewhere! This position faciliates ease of movement in going to any of the four corners with equal speed for lin sil die dar!

Hi Sifu Lamar!
Just a question on the rear hand.If a person was doing a jab, cross, hook combination should the rear hand cover the exposed jaw line during this?
best wishes
Martin

Combos / Covering

June 21 2006, 7:43 AM

Hi Martin!

I advocate a similar position during the hook on the jab/cross/hook combo, but with the hand leading the head just a bit! This assures that your head is covered, and keeps your hand from obstructing your view and being driven into your face by an oncoming attack! I hope that makes sense! I hope that all is well with you, your family and the guys! Say hello to everyone for me, and give your mom my best!
