JKD Boxing Drill ?

Sifu Lamar,

I hope you are well. At the last camp we worked on the jkd boxing drills from right lead to right lead position. I was working on these in class and we have a few lefties in our group and thought it made sense to train against both left and right power side forward folks.

If I am in a right lead and they are in a left lead and they are feeding me:

1) For the left hook, I assume I step in and cover with my right hand, the opposite of what we normally do.

2)Against a left lead straight do you recommend a shoulder roll or catch?

3)For their right cross I assume is is a wong pak with the rear hand.

Can you clarify for me?

Thanks,

Jim Riggio

Boxing Drills / Mismatched Leads

Hello Jim!

I hope that all is well with you! Here are the answers to your questions.

1) For the left hook, I assume I step in and cover with my right hand, the opposite of what we normally do.

Smother with your right side, or palm stop to the bicep.

2)Against a left lead straight do you recommend a shoulder roll or catch?

Outside slip (to your right) and wu sao (backhand parry). You may also execute the stop catch if you like (since you are wearing gloves). Shoulder roll is also possible, but maybe a little slow considering the range of their punch. Try it and see how it feels!

3)For their right cross I assume is is a wong pak with the rear hand.

Woang pak with your rear hand or shoulder roll.

I hope that clears this up for you! Try these things next time you have a chance!

Keep Blasting!
