Sifu Davis: Stright kick

Hello Sifu Davis. I've been having my doubts regarding the lead stright kick. Is it stomp kick that lands with the ball of the foot ortoe of the foot.Or is it an upward snap kick that lands with the instep. An as a general training tip, what in you opinion is the best way to start the training of kicks (i.e. constant slow repetitions without any contact to moderate speed repetitions, the most suitable equipment)Do you have any knowledge of the methods Bruce Lee favored as most appropriate? Thanks a lot Sifu.

javier.

P.S. Did you get the Bruce Lee pics I sent you? Any Chinatown, Los Angeles pics you might have? Cheers.

DVD's and BOOK

June 23 2006, 11:20 AM

I will be the one to say it again. If I am out of line, Sifu, I apologize in advance. If this offendes anyone else I apologize; but this is my opinion.

Javier

I commend you on your will and zeist for learning. Buy Sifu's dvd's and book (soon to be books). Then if you don't understand something ask questions. Go to http://www.realcombatonline.com ,Sifu has alot of articles on that site as well. This way he is not restating/rewriting the articles. I have the great pleasure of training with Sifu Davis and I still bought his book and dvd"s. I use them as miniture HIT sessions when I train at home. I can rewind as much as I need to. Again please don't take to much offense but this has been suggested several times.

Keep up the learning process.

Kent

Am not offended kent. Not at all. I know where you are coming from. I do own about 15 to 20 books dealing with jeet kune do alone. Thing is I'm always looking for a second opinion, that is why I'm so darn inquisitive. There is always more to learn from different points of view. Cheers mate.

Javier.

Jik Tek

June 23 2006, 12:39 PM

Hello Javier!

The jik tek (straight kick) is one of my favorite attacking tools! It is delivered in a quick, upward snapping movement and the impact occurs with the toe or the instep. Since Jeet Kune Do is a shoe art, it allows us the benefit of kicking with the toe! Now, the other kick you mentioned is dum tek (stamp kick) and falls into a different category!

It is best to start off working the form in a kick, just kicking air. Learn to put the necessary footwork with the kick. Then, once you have the form down, start working to develop speed. then, and only then, should you add impact training. Impact training will vary from hanging paper (speed and accuracy) to focus gloves (various combinations, target heights and moving targets) to the heavy bag (power and penetration). My guess would be that this is how Bruce Lee did things! It is practical, effective and scientific, just like Jeet Kune Do!

As for photos, I already had those that you sent me, as I have a HUGE collection of rare Bruce Lee photos. My problem is that (1) I do not have time to spend scanning my photos to send to others and (2) I take very good care of my books/magazines, and would not bend them to put them on the scanner anyway! I do occasionally run across things that are well worth looking at on the internet, which is where "copy and paste" and "save as" comes into play! If I see anything you might like, I'll try to snag it for you!

Keep Blasting!
