I guess that you all my know that when the subject of trapping comes up i have to put in my 2cents.2 words Time and Effort is what it takes to develope your trapping skills. What i like to do when i work trapping skill is of course Crossing hand drills then apply it from a distance maybe with a opening with a kick or punch.Trapping should always be preceded with a strike,I would work on making it work on Boxers,Streetfighters,Kickers and Grapplers.Lately i been really working my Trapping from the ground while the grappler is trying to apply his thing,I'm doing mine.Keeping him off balance and Straight blasting,Elbowing, pak, lop etc, thumbs in the eyes and we are having a blast (no pun intended).Sometime i like to let my friend to shoot in and take me down just so that i can work it,i get out of the headlock strike trap and blast.Again you must learn how to make it work, its not going to work for you.You know that the grapplers and kickboxer are training hard and they are good,So why not the trappers.Happy Training Mike Sheng

Good Points!

June 24 2006, 2:50 PM

Hello Mike!

I recently showed a couple of my guys how well Jun Fan/Jeet Kune Do works from the ground and just why it works so well! Since we do not have to "load up" for a strike, we do not chamber the elbow or pull it back at all before striking. In other words, I should be able to punch flat on my back very easily since my elbows normally stay out in front of me anyway! The Wing Chun jik chung chuie fits in beautifully here, as does the bil jee! Also, chi sao, lin sil die dar and all traps work very well from the ground! Most have never looked into this, and are not aware of how effective it can be! My opponents became frustrated very quickly, and I was just "playing around" with this stuff! Hey! IT WORKS!

Keep Blasting!

Re: Back to the development of trapping

I can remember back in the early 90's Sifu Randy Williams had an article in "Inside Kung Fu magazine about using Wing Chun Groundfighting Skills and the Wing Chun World went crazy,Saying "How can he justify Groundfighting in Wing Chun".I always felt that it was commonsense and the laws of adaptability.I saw a really good tape on it by Emin Boztepe which really got my creative juices on the move and like yourself i played around with it and still working it.I think that most JKD guys forgot what Bruce preach about being adaptable to the circumstances,I think about that conversation he had with Sifu Ted Wong about what does a Fighter need and Adaptability was the answers.I don't believe that a fight ends for us when the guy is choking us (JKD GUYS)or doing a leglock etc and he still has his eyes or throat.I'm not saying that i'm great but if you choke out a JKD guy then he earned it,Thats the only way (LOL) Happy Training Mike Sheng

When there is emptiness, strike!

June 28 2006, 8:26 AM

A lot of grapplers forget about striking once they end up on the ground. Or they wait until there is a clear opening. however, there are several opportunities when you are caught on the ground to utilize striking. To me, striking is more than just punching, it is also elbows, forearm smashes, palm strikes, eye raking, etc. I have met and trained with grapplers who only do grappling and have pretty weak striking ability either standing or on the ground. Those guys are lost in a real figt, no question.

I agree with you, sometimes a person can get mold minded and i do find that with most grapplers,However once they can get in to do their thing and you wait on them they will tear a a striker to shreads. You're right most do forget about striking and thats one thing that we can captialize on with our strikes,Headbutts,Elbows, gouge the eyes and straightblast etc.Mike Sheng
