Sifu davis, how u been? I am very happy to let you know that have been taking Wing Chun for about 2/3 mos. now! My sifu is David Robinson, he is a 4th generation instructor, Yip Man lineage (so i'm learning EXACTLY what Lee Jun Fan learned!) and i have learned 2 out of the three sections of sil lim tao, also i just learned Pak Da. in WC we use a squared stance, and my sifu says that the JKD bai Jong is a bad stance because it doesn't allow for the use of both hands at the same time, but i tend to think he's just blinded by classical mess, as Bruce would say.

anyway, 1 thing I wanted to ask you is how does all the things i learn in wing chun translate to the JKD Bai Jong? My main problem is that the Bai Jong changes your centerline a little (or at least thats what i thought, you would know better than me)

Another thing, What are some trapping moves that are ONLY in JKD, 1f any? (i would love to do them in class and suprise my sihings) Also, I'm pretty sure i have the form for the straight lead down, but how can i add that extra little THWACK that can knock someone out?

all help appreciated thnx
ALEX

Hi....I'm not Sifu Davis...but I have a couple of answers...

Hi Alex,

Here are some of my thoughts on this.

"in WC we use a squared stance, and my sifu says that the JKD bai Jong is a bad stance because it doesn't allow for the use of both hands at the same time, but i tend to think he's just blinded by classical mess, as Bruce would say."

I have seen some many different versions of a JKD bi jong that you never know what your Wing Chun has seen. He/she does make a valid point regarding a squared up stance and in fact, many Jeet Kune Do instructors teach that as you get closer with your opponent, that you should square up more (while still keeping your structure) for just the reason stated. In fact, Steve Golden, an original Bruce Lee student that both Sifu Davis and I have trained with uses a squared up stance.

"anyway, 1 thing I wanted to ask you is how does all the things i learn in wing chun translate to the JKD Bai Jong?"

Some things may, and others may not. However, you will have a great time figuring out which is which, and where you will maybe want to adjust your stance to incorporate some Wing Chun ideas that you find effective.

"My main problem is that the Bai Jong changes your centerline a little (or at least that's what I thought, you would know better than me)"

Really? I hadn't noticed that. Sure, in a JKD bi jong you may be turn off center a bit more, the core line that runs down the center of your body (some call this a motherline) is still the same, and if you are going to square off more as your get closer to your opponent anyway, I wouldn't worry about it.

"Another thing, What are some trapping moves that are ONLY in JKD, 1f any? (i would love to do them in class and surprise my sihings)"

I am not sure of any traps that are only in JKD, but you may find more direct hitting. An example may be from a Right High Outside Reference point, you could fire off a Pak Sau Da (get cross energy) and then Lop Sau Da....or you can JKD that up with this...From a Right High Outside Reference point, you could fire off a Pak Sau Da (get cross energy) Insert a strike with your Pak Sau arm/hand and then Lop Sau Da. See the difference?

Now, if you really want to impress your sihings, you should work to use your wing chun better. If you do something not found in their system, they may just write off what you do as "broken wing chun" even if it is effective. However, if you use something FROM their system, better than they do...well, they have nothing to say other than "Hey, show me how to do that." Work on dissolving energy.

"Also, I'm pretty sure i have the form for the straight lead down, but how can i add that extra little THWACK that can knock someone out?"

There are a done of drills and little ideas that will make your straightlead more powerful. Here is one that I teach. Make sure your arm and hand are completely relaxed until the moment of impact. This will had a much needed SNAP into your punch.

I hope that helped a bit.
