keeping "secrets"

I have been roaming through other forums and always come across a person who says that they have been shown "special" techniques or moves from their instructors. They then go on to say that they are not allowed to teach or show these things to anyone. Why would a teacher/instructor want this? I know way back when, the teachers didn't want competition with senior/advance students opening their own schools and would hold back knowledge to have an advantage over them. But why do this now days? I have coached younger kids in many different sports and have tried to depart as much knowledge or skills to them as possible. It gives me great pleasure and joy to see them develope and possibly do better than myself. I have read where other people say Bruce Lee would show someone something then tell them not to tell/show others. Could this be, because he was showing them something that suited their body type or skill level? I can understand this way of thinking. If not for this reason why would a teacher/instructor do this? I await your thoughts and comments.

Response to keeping secrets

September 28 2006, 11:34 AM

Hi Kent:

I read somewhere that Bruce Lee did not teach
quite everything because he did not want to
give anyone the tools to "beat him". I don't
remember where I read this and Sifu Davis
can tell you more, I am sure.

However, it is noble and good to share all we
can with those who are honest and good moral
people. It would probably be wise to be
discerning about imparting too much to someone
who seems to be a "bully" or trouble-maker.
The best thing would be not to teach them at all.
That is my opinion.

I personally prefer good Christian character,
as I believe you do, too. Someone who knows Jesus
will most likely be interested in self-defense
and NOT aggression.

Hope this helps. God bless you.

Dick

I agree

I agree with being selective in who you teach or instruct. But if all of YOUR students are willing to learn then shouldn't one teach them all that one can? If they are good enough to teach a little then, given enough time to make sure they are the quality that you desire (people do change), shouldn't they be worth teaching all? Even if it is just a few that pass muster (military term) shouldn't they be allowed to teach what you have given/taught them?

Hit the nail on the head... poor nail.

Hey Kent,

I think that is exactly what some of these "secret keepers" do - they DO teach it (otherwise how do you know about it?) but only to the very dedicated.

I see no problem with that whatsoever.

I responded to this same thread on Lamar's other forum with some other thoughts.

Sounds like a plan!

Hi Kent:

I agree with you. If all of us hold back
something different, pretty soon the whole
art of JKD would vanish!

Have a great day!

Holding Back

September 29 2006, 7:38 AM

Hi Guys!

One thing you can be assured of is that I will not hold anything back from you! Now, there may be some things you are not ready for, and the time will come if you train with me long enough, but I will keep nothing from you! It wouldn't do any good for me to have spent so much time with all of these First Generation students of Bruce Lee if I was just going to hold all of the knowledge for myself! As for things about this art I may not know yet, if it's out there, I WILL find it! The quest continues!

I Don't Have A Problem . . .

September 29 2006, 11:15 PM

with giving out the "secrets" to my students. I find that some of them will get it and others will take more time to get it anyway. And even if they get it at first, there's a chance that they will forget anyway and have to be reminded.
