Hello Everyone!

I have been thinking a lot about the attitude that many people seem to have toward Dan Inosanto and his approach to teaching Jeet Kune Do. Some say that he doesn't teach Jeet Kune Do anymore, while others say that he doesn't really know Jeet Kune Do.

If you want to see what Dan Inosanto teaches as Jeet Kune Do, and the proof that he DOES KNOW and DOES still carry on Bruce Lee's teachings, look at the material put out by Yorinaga (Yori) Nakamura. Yori has put out around nine or ten books on Bruce Lee and Jun Fan Gung Fu/Jeet Kune Do. He refers to most of his material as Tao of Jeet Kune.

Yori travelled to the United States from Japan to learn Jun Fan Gung Fu and Jeet Kune Do from Dan Inosanto. He was there training in 1990 when I visited Los Angeles, and was teaching Dan Inosanto and Richard Bustillo Shootfighting in exchange for learning Jun Fan Gung Fu and Jeet Kune Do. He was already quite proficient back then, so you can imagine how good he must be now.

He has worked very hard to bring Bruce Lee's true teachings to Japan, and has done a great job of it! He will soon release a four volume DVD set called Bruce Lee's Tao of Jeet Kune, and Dan Inosanto will be in the DVDs with him. He also has a new book coming out this month called Bruce Lee's Jeet Kune Do. I'm sure that it will be quite good, and I am anxious to get it!

The problem that has developed over the years between the JKD concepts people and the original Jeet Kune Do people is more the fault of the students than their Instructors! Also, it is the misinterpretation of things by those who do not really know what is going on that causes most of the problems! Dan Inosanto has always taught Jun Fan Gung Fu and Jeet Kune Do, he is just not as open and commercial about it as most!

Don't misunderstand me here, however! No, I am not changing my attitude and opinions, switching over to JKD concepts and jumping on the Inosanto bandwagon, I just think that the man deserves way more credit and respect than he has gotten over the years! He DOES know Jeet Kune Do and he CAN teach it to others, and should be respected for his abilities and his timeless devotion to the martial arts! That is all that I am saying here!

That is a very cool post. I agree 100%, and think anyone who trained with Bruce probably has "it" even if they don't always show it to others.

I'm also glad to see you supporting Dan for his knowledge. Very cool.

Hey Sifu Davis

That's very cool, I remember you once posted saying you wanted a particular book by that author.

But aren't his materials hard to find? I remember the cover you posted was in Japanese, is the inside translated?

Nakamura Books

Hello Wei Lin!

The books are all in Japanese, but there is actually not very much text. Mostly photos, and the sequences are very easy to understand if you have had any training at all. Plus, each of his books are filled with extremely rare photos of Bruce Lee, and the quality is amazing! Each book is easily worth owning, whether you can read the text or not! And yes, they are quite often very hard to find, but well worth the effort

A very classy and absolutely accurate take on Dan Inosanto and his contribution to Jeet Kune Do's legacy. I believe that time will judge the man very favorably.

Hello Lamar,

I for one don't see this as a change in your position. I seem to recall that you felt Kevin Seaman had done a decent job in his book on "Jun Fan Gung Fu". I think that JKD concepts has as much to do with Dan's promise to Bruce not to teach JKD commercially as anything else. Just my opinion.

Regards,

John M. Drake
