Hello Alex!
We line up on the opponent's motherline. While you cannot always face their centerline (they may turn it away from you), the motherline always stays in the same place! Also, some JKD practitioners advocate an almost straight alignment of the legs. We use the angular alignment, just as shown by Bruce Lee in the Bruce Lee's Fighting Method books! There are several reasons for this, but primarily lateral stability, torque capability and the ability to use both lead and rear side weapons without telegraphing your intention by having to change your alignment to strike!
Countering an opponent's right cross is actually very easy (assuming they are in a left lead as most non-JKD fighters normally stand). Zone to their outside (your right) as you fire a lead straight punch or lead bil jee, then follow immediately with a rear straight to the body. Or, you can slip to the outside of their arm and use woang pak da (cross slap cover with hit), punching them full in the face with a lead chung chuie! You can also just lean back slightly and kick them as they rotate for the punch. All of these work well, and are some of my personal favorites!
Hope that helps!
Keep Blasting!
