Hey Sifu Davis

I recently read about how you went to each OBLS and went back to Alabama to train what each taught you on your own. How did you make this work without any other JKD people around you? Mostly solo training? Or did you find workout partners with similar interests, or did you train with other martial artists?

Hello Wei Lin!

I was already an instructor in several martial arts before I started Jun Fan Gung Fu and Jeet Kune Do. I already had a growing student base, and switched over to teaching Jun Fan Gung Fu after getting certified as a Full Instructor by Sifu Joseph Cowles from the Seattle period. From that point on, I mainly got my training through sponsoring seminars with various individuals who trained directly with Bruce Lee, and going to training camps taught by various First and Second Generation Jeet Kune Do instructors! Yes, I spent most of my early time in this art training away either by myself or with senior students who had trained with me for a long time! These people eventually became my Assistant Instructors, and several are now certified Full Instructors under me. I would hate to know how much money I have spent on my education in this art (and continue to spend), but I will say that it has been (and continues to be) worth EVERY PENNY of it, especially when you consider what all I have accomplished!

Hey Sifu Davis

Your training background is very interesting to know. I'm wondering, how did you get to be so good at chi-sau if you were basically chi-sau-ing with people that were no more trained in chi sau than yourself?

Hello Wei Lin!

One of my Instructors that I had in my mid-teens was from California and had grown up out there training in many martial arts. He taught me Ed Parker's Kenpo, Northern Shaolin Gung Fu, Preying Mantis Gung Fu and some Wing Chun sticking and trapping. He was very good at chi sao and I spent a lot of time sticking hands with him. That was from the time I was sixteen until I turned twenty. I was VERY GOOD at chi sao before I ever started Jun Fan Gung Fu and Jeet Kune Do, so everything after that came very easily and very quickly to me!
