Hey Sifu Davis,

How would one go about fighting a short fighter who is very strong and likes to get inside and throw heavy hooks? Or a short strong fighter who wants to take you down?

These are my ideas, but may not work for everyone. Everyone feel free to criticize if I'm wrong.

Hopefully, you have a chance to intercept the opponent before he can get inside. A straight lead punch to the nose can be devistating if he steps into it.

Footwork is absolutely key if you have room to move around. A reach advantage can be huge IF you're able to maintain your comfortable fighting distance and use footwork to not allow him to get into his comfortable fighting distance.

If you're unfortunate enough to have the fight begin with him in close on you, keep control of the center line and use your simultaneous block encounters to manage his hooks while pounding him up the middle.

Also, if it's in close, you're in prime trapping range. Every fight situation is different, but if your opponents hands get into a trappable position, you can end the fight very quickly. Of course this takes tons of energy/sensitivity training so that you just trap without thinking about it.

And finally, if you get an open line for an elbow shot, go for it. It's a real moneymaker.

Hello Wei Lin!

First of all, excellent comments from Scott!

Q: How would one go about fighting a short fighter who is very strong and likes to get inside and throw heavy hooks?

A: Kick, kick and kick some more! The mid to lowline is wide open when an opponent over commits to a hook punch! Try a stamp kick to the solar plexus/chest! I nearly put a guy through a wall with that one time! The straight kick to the groin works well here also!

Q: Or a short strong fighter who wants to take you down?

A: Jam his trap/shoulder with your forearm as he tries to come in. Use your free hand to control his arm on that same side. You will need to bend your knees, step back with one leg and drop low to do this, but it gives you range and places your legs out of his reach! Once you stop his rush, there are several things that you can do. I personally like to throw repeated rakes to the face using a rigid clawhand.

One more thing ...

In the previous post, when I said jam his trap/shoulder, I was referring to the trapezius muscle!

Hello,

Scott, Sifu Davis, I will take all your answers into consideration.

Sifu Davis, what is a stamp kick?

Also, is there some other alternative than raking someone's eyes out? LOL.

Wei Lin

Alternatives?

Hello Wei Lin!

NO ... there are absolutely, under no circumstances, any substitution whatsoever for raking their eyes out! You MUST do it immediately!

JUST KIDDING!

Dum Tek - Stamp Kick

July 7 2007, 7:57 AM

Hello Wei Lin!

Dum tek is executed by raising your knee toward your chest, then viciously stamping straight forward into the opponent's solar plexus region! It can also be directed downward, either raking the shin before stamping into the instep, or just directly stamping onto the instep. Then there is lin dum tek, the cross stamping kick, also known as an oblique kick, which I'm sure you have seen before. It is most often directed to the upper shin, or right into the knee, and on occasion, the instep All of these are variations of the dum tek, and impact is with the heel. I tell my students to always impact with the heel, and stamp into the opponent as if you are trying to punch a hole in the chosen target!
