Hi Sifu,

I have a question about something I saw in the Oakland Curriculum. Under kicking drills it says "Clockwork kicking: real-time kicking with the closest weapon". What exactly is this drill? Thanks in advance.

Clockwork Kicking

July 8 2007, 11:58 PM

Hello rene!

That is basically the same as the drills you know as "Three Way Kicking" and "Five Way Kicking". You can also look at it like the face of a clock. If you are facing 12:00, three way kicking would be right leg Jik Tek to 12:00, Juk Tek to 3:00 and Hou tek to 6:00. That would be followed by left leg Jik Tek to 12:00, Juk Tek to 9:00 and Hou Tek to 6:00. Five way kicking right leg times would be 12:00, 1:30, 3:00, 4:30 and 6:00. Five way kicking left leg times would be 12:00, 10:30, 9:00, 7:30 and 6:00. I'm sure you get the idea by now! When you are doing the drill, your partner calls out the time. You react by kicking with the closest leg to the time on the clock, executing the kick in that direction, with 12:00 and 6:00 being available to either leg (based on whether standing neutral or full on guard of course)!

1:30 & 4:30 ... 10:30 & 7:30

July 9 2007, 7:17 AM

Hi Gregg!

1:30 is a right angular hook kick and 4:30 is a right angular back/side kick. 10:30 is a left angular hook kick and 7:30 is a left angular back/side kick.

Another Question

July 22 2007, 12:17 AM

Hello Sifu,

In the same area of the curriculum it says "Combination clockwork kicking & hitting: advanced". What is that and how does it differ from clockwork kicking? Thanks for the earlier response, by the way. That is a very interesting way to do the kicking drills.

Combinations

July 22 2007, 9:31 AM

Hello Again Rene!

The Instructor/Trainer calls out the time, the student/training partner responds immediately with a hand/foot or foot/hand combination to that time based on starting alignment and position.

This is how

July 9 2007, 7:21 AM

What Sifu Lamar meant when he said 1:30 is kick halfway between 1 and 2. Take for example 12:00 and 3:00, 1:30 would be the mid-point of those two directions so you would be kicking with your right leg in the middle of 12:00 and 3:00.
