Hello Andrew!
Proper breathing is very important, especially during physical exertion! Many people tend to hold their breath, which is bad. You should always exhale sharply through the mouth when executing techniques, just as you would during the maximum exertion phase of a physical exercise. It amazes me how many people do now know this and use it to their advantage! In through the nose ... out through the mouth! Good post, and good observation on your part!
