Hi
Does anyone know of any good drills/equipment that is good to practise slipping or basically evading attacks?
Thanks
Tom

Evasion Skills

August 12 2007, 6:20 PM

Hello Tom!

You will need a partner wearing boxing gloves. Have him throw straight line punches at you (right at your face ... NOT where he knows you will be after the evasion) as you slip, making the punch barely miss. Start off slow with this, and gradually pick up the pace as you adjust to the movements. As you probably know, you can slip left, right or straight back. It is best when slipping left or right to end up on the outside of your opponent's punch, so if the opponent punches with their right, you would want to slip to your left. If they punch with their left, you want to slip to your right. Train your slipping so that your partner's incoming punch barely misses you. You want to be able to counterstrike simultaneously, or immediately after the evasion. In order to do so, you must be in range. I hope this helps!

Slipping

The Drill that Sifu describes is obviously the best since you are working with a live partner. If one is not available, and I spent many years without the benifit of a training partner, a double ended bag helps. However you have to really work at making it benifit you. When you strike the bag sharply you must be close enough that it can hit you on the return. You may want to loosen up the cords so it returns a greater distance ( although it will not return as quickly). You must also be sure to slip at the last moment in response to the actual return of the bag and not just because you know that it will return. In other words don't just punch and slip, rather punch, see the bag returning then slip.

One other substitute is to tape yourself or a classmate throwing punches then slip in response to the video. You can't train distance with this drill but you can improve your reaction time.

I have found that these help when you don't have a partner.
