heavy bag

November 7 2007, 9:05 AM

Hey Gary

I train my jab-hook-cross and the take their head off hit. I also train the hook to the body then another hook straight to the head combo. I have recently started training my straight blast on it for more power. I do this along with punching in the air for speed. I will also train some of the kicks suck as the hook-stomp-side-either back kick etc... You have to be careful though as this can hurt your knees and or foot if you are not used to it. When you start try a lighter heavy bag and not the really big ones.

thanks Kent

i try and mix it up with my strikes

jab, cross, hooks, uppercuts, elbows, knees, low line kicks, st. kicks, straight blast, just use my imagination

i started out with the help of a pro boxer, just doing boxing and when i started jkd, i incorperated evrything

and yes my hands hurt like crazy at first and so did my shins but now i go all out and no pain

i alternate between 3x8 rds,5x5 rds, and 4x7 rds

Good Gary!

November 8 2007, 1:19 AM

Hi Gary!

That is good! It sounds like you are on the right track! Just remember that JKD punching structure is quite a bit different from boxing's structure! I am not real fond of the heavy bag, as I have found that while it is good for power development, it tends to retard speed if you spend too much time on it. Be sure to balance your heavy bag work with other striking apparatus, such as the mook jong, the Wing Chun wall bag, hanging paper (or other light targets ... for pure speed development), and the double end bag! A good balance in your training is the key to overall skill improvement!
