HI Kent:
Great question. I think...willingness to learn.
Openness, not preconceived notions. We all need
humility in any endeavor. Really, anytime we
need to know how to walk, look at what Jesus said
and did.
Exploration in martial arts techniques, etc., can
be beneficial. Also, making sure we have a good
instructor. We are cool on that one!
Hope this helps. God bless you.

The student must be humble enough to learn. He may be greatly gifted but is arrogant and sometimes this gets in the way. Just because you can do something does not mean you can do it well. they must realize that they can always learn or get better. They also must be loyal. As my statement in the sifu thread you are aprt of a family so you should support that family. This means not disrupting class by talking when the sifu is talking or moving around when the sifu is demostrating something. Showing up for class or seminars when you can. The student must be willing to learn and train both in and out of class. you reflect on your family (sifu and classmates) just as your family reflects on you. I support my family and my family had supported me. I support my JKD family and my JKD family had supported me.
In other words you as a student must be willing to do what it takes to see that your family prospers. Don't be the bad apple.
