Hello Edsel!
The beauty of the springarm is that you can very inexpensively design several ways to mount it. It can be used anywhere that you can bore a 1 1/8 inch hole three inches deep (or have enough clearance behind whatever you bore the hole in to insert the arm shaft all the way without hitting anything ... like a 2 x 4 for instance).
Straight out at about shoulder height is the most commonly used position to work the springarm. Two springarms mounted about chest height and about 8" apart are great for chi sao strengthening work. Two springarms mounted side by side about 12" apart at chest height and one centered about 12" lower is perfect for working drills similar to mook jong work. A springarm mounted pointing upward at 45 degrees (with the end of the arm about the same height as your chin) can represent an opponent's lead arm in an on guard position. Two mounted side by side about 10" apart at this angle could represent the boxer's "peek-a-boo" arm position. A springarm mounted pointing straight up with the end about nose height can be used for sliding leverage "threading the needle" drills.
