Hello,

Just something that got me curious about Kenpo and Jeet Kune do. Please excuse me for my naivety if what i'm asking is obvious.

Recently i was looking at some demos on youtube for kenpo. One of the moves i've seen had a similar technique to ABD as he drew the opponents step side kick and parried it to the side and lead front kicked to the groin. i've seen the same move in Bruce Lee's Fighting Method Basic Training.

I know Ed Parker and Bruce Lee were friends. Did Bruce ever learn any Kenpo? What did he think of it? and did it have any influence or did Bruce have any influence in Kenpo?

Just another thing i thought maybe somene would know.

I've never seen kenpo before i looked at it on youtube.

Thanks

Edsel William Aquino

Kenpo & JKD

Hello Edsel!

Ed Parker and Bruce Lee were very good friends. Ed Parker took many things that he saw Bruce Lee do and implemented them into his kenpo. I have trained extensively in kenpo (back in the seventies), and was awarded a second degree black belt before discontinuing my training. Many of Bruce Lee's better students came from Ed Parker's kenpo, such as Steve Golden, Jerry Poteet and Dan Inosanto. There are several references to Bruce Lee throughout Ed Parker's excellent book series, Infinite Insights Into Kenpo Karate. After reading those books, it becomes rather obvious that Ed Parker really got a lot from his time with Bruce Lee!

Kenpo & JKD

Sifu Davis,

I also noticed that their moves where more circular and seemed to move from the elbows. This reminds me of a similar martial art like Southern Praying Mantis Kung Fu.

I remember reading somewhere that Bruce Lee learnt a certain type of praying mantis, is this true? and was it Northern or Southern?

I also remember that when i was learning in the concept camp that we used a drill called the praying mantis harmonious spring drill. Is this a part of Original jkd OR was this a concept change/progression?(call it what you will)

Thanks to any who can answer this question

Southern Mantis

Hello Edsel!

It was Southern Mantis that Bruce Lee trained in. The harmonious spring drill, both single arm and double arm, is a part of the original JKD curriculum. I teach it to all of my students, and occasionally work it into class.

Hi Sifu Lamar
Are those drills covered in any of your Original JKD DVDs?
