letting go, getting rid...

When you started training in JKD what did you find the most difficult thing. My issues were with flowing, relaxing and grabbing. By grabbing I mean tyhat I had trained for years to wrestle and with law enforcment training to "man handle" a person to the ground. If mt hand touched a wrist or an arm I would grab. Also since I am slightly bigger than the average guy and had played football for years it was engrained into me to power through and against every thing. Even in TKD I was taught power and power through. Always tensed up and ready to explode. Example if I threw a puch at you and you blocked/parried it I would not flow into a trap but would upon conyact try and power my way through. I was a damned if you are going to try and stop me person or like other martial styles I would disengage and try it again. I still have trouble relaxing but not as bad as I use to. if I am having difficulties doing a drill or something I become frustrated and thus tense up even more and all this does is hamper me.

OK I have shared my "flaws" now I await yours.

Kent

letting go

January 12 2008, 8:07 PM

Kent,

Hope you are well. Been out sick lately but glad to be back to class tomorrow. The two most difficult things have been distance and interception. I studied goju for many years and traditional arts never really deal with the issue of ranges and how important distance/footwork are to everything. Interception is the other item that was a wow. Comng from the block and punch world I still struggle with this. It is easier in drilling but in sparring well it's a real test.

All the best,

Jim

for me it has to be relaxing, also coming from a football background i have a tendancy to tighen up while doing things instead of just letting them happen. i have gotten alot better at it but still am working on it

So True!

Hi Guys!

I have found in my years of teaching that the problem you mention is the most common among those who come to Jeet Kune Do either from another art or from another sports background! It is hard to learn to just relax and allow things to happen as they should. Jeet Kune Do is an art that requires a combination of the yin and yang, requiring the practitioner to be soft as cotton at times, yeilding like a willow tree, then hard as steel at other times, like a steel bar blasting through a concrete wall! It is the ability to develop the attributes necessary for this to happen "without thought" that most people find dificult to develop!
