I was noticing while browsing the web that when throwing the straight lead there will be a slight arc, and eventually with time it will disappear. Are the talking about the wrist, the arm or what? confused

hi jason,

the arm rotate a bit on the recovery .

the straight lead is not difficult to execute once you have seen how its done , its just that it seems people like to keep that technique secret :P

you should try to find a good video or something where its demonstrated and then practice it for ever , between now and ever you will get good at it im sure :P

hope it help

a plus!

Applying The Shortened Arc

April 18 2008, 9:40 PM

Hello Jason!

The main advantage of the short arc straight punch is that the power flow continues right through the target. The idea is to increase the power of the punch by giving the punch "follow through" as in the swing of a baseball bat or a golf club, rather than the straight out, straight back motion of the normal jab or straight punch.

The punch starts off looking just like a normal vertical fist lead straight punch. You turn your waist and hips into it and push/pivot from the raised rear heel position, penetrating the target with maximum force and as your arm fully extends, rather than stop for a split second and return on the same path, continue your motion by arcing slightly inward and just through the centerline. Using this arc of continuous motion, you can return immediately to your on guard position. In other words, once the punching movement starts, it doesn't stop until you have recovered to your on guard!

Now, make sure that you are using a short arc rather than a long arc. The long arc is a powerful blow also, but is only used when executing a "finishing move" at the end of a combination of strikes! The long arc takes more recovery time and exposes your centerline for a brief moment.

I have used the shortened arc principle, combined with the principle of concurring and overlapping circles, to double a students punching power in a single private lesson! IT WORKS!

Concurring & Overlapping Circles

April 20 2008, 3:28 PM

Hi Guys!

These are the small circles made by the different parts of the body in order to generate the necessary power for the punch. This involves what has been referred to as the wholon principle (the sum of the parts is equal to or greater than the whole). When you punch correctly, the entire body gets in on the act. Each of the following parts/connecting joints makes a small circular motion to combine all parts for maximum power.

Ball of foot
Ankle
Knee
Hip
Waist
Shoulder
Elbow
Wrist

These small circular motions in proper sequence are referred to as concurring and overlapping circles.
