Other than Bruce Lee who was your biggest martial arts influence.

Call me corny, but me a Millenial Generation kid, The Teenaged Mutant Ninja Turtles, Dragon Ball Z, and Mortal Kombat got me into martial arts.

I got my first taste at the age of nine with this Karate dojo that had a Sub-Zero and Liu Kang sleep over. Since then I was hooked.

I then started taekwondo at 16, and when I saw one of the students (who later became like a mentor to me) who did 540's 720's and butterfly twists I was like man, this is some MAtrix stuff right here.

Since then I believe I have matured and started to like more serious self defense, thus my interest in JKD.

Bruce Lee All The Way! :-)

April 23 2008, 1:13 PM

Hey, with me it was Bruce Lee right from the start! I really can't claim any differently! Watching the Green Hornet as a boy, I knew that whatever it was that this "Kato" guy was doing, that is what I wanted to do as well! After seeing the "Way of The Intercepting Fist" episode of Longstreet, I was convinced more than ever! Jeet Kune Do ALL THE WAY for me!

me too!

April 23 2008, 2:12 PM

I got started in the martial arts before I knew who Bruce Lee was. Then one saturday I came home from class and turned on "Action Theater" and it was a "Bruce Li" movie about Bruce Lee called "Bruce Lee, the man the myth". That was it, from that point on I was hooked on Bruce!

But, I also really loved Chuck Norris a lot! I was a teenager in the 80's so to me, Chuck was the best LIVING martial artist! LOL

As far as who my influences are in reality.

I have that movie on VHS and wow was it horrible. I bet if Bruce were still alive, his ego would be stroked. Or maybe not...

Anywho, I can't wait until there's a martial art that can allow me to shoot fire balls out of my hand. Now that my friend would be hard to intercept.

Bruce Lee, The Man & The Myth

April 23 2008, 9:52 PM

Actually, that movie is a LOT BETTER than the ridiculous "Dragon, The Bruce Lee Story". It is much more historically accurate, and the techniques shown and used by Bruce Li portraying Bruce Lee are quite good! I personally feel that was the best imitation of Bruce Lee EVER! I still to this day will go back and watch it occasionally. Funny thing is, Jason Scott Lee moved more like Bruce Lee in "Timecop 2" than he did in "Dragon"! I think by then he was more comfortable with his Jeet Kune Do skills, which were great in "Timecop 2". And with Sifu Jerry Poteet doing the choreography, it couldn't help but look good!

Re: Bruce Lee, The Man & The Myth

I also enjoyed "The Man, the Myth". In fact I saw most of Bruce Li's movies, the good and the horrible. Bruce Lee was undoubtedly my greatest inspiration for years.
My teacher for the last 10 is now. But there was another individual that really inspired me for years and you may find this odd. As I moved into my late 30's and early 40's I found training inpsiration in Michael Jordon. As he aged, he adapted his game, still trained intensly, stayed at the top of his game, schooled the youngsters, and had a will to win that was matched by very few.
Maybe it is not that odd. James Coburn once said that Bruce Lee was the Michael Jordon of Martial Arts.

as a child....

of the 80's it was Chuck Norris, Bruce Lee and all the ninja/kung fu movies of that time. Really enjoyed kungfu action theater every Saturday afternoons. And yes I did order and get a ninja outfit.

Nostalgia

April 25 2008, 2:22 AM

I will be brave and say David Carradine was my greatest (formative)martial arts influence. I loved the re-runs of "Kung-Fu'.
I wish I could've seen some re-runs of "Long Street", or "Green Hornet".
Even as a kid though, I knew the later seasons of "Kung Fu" were crap. David Carradine got too mystical and ego-driven.
After that, like Kent, I watched the Kung-fu theatre shows every saturday, and must confess I love the '70's kung fu movies. Every once in a while they'd play "Enter the Dragon" or "Chinese Connection"
Never got into Norris, but remember the rise of the 20th. century conception of ninjas in "The Octagon."
Sometimes I wonder how awesome "Kung-Fu" would've been if Bruce was cast as Cane.
