Hey guys
Something was just on my mind lately and I wanted to hear people's thoughts/opinions. I have been checking out different martial art places nearby and some were priced much better than others. There was one Wing Chun school but unfortunately they wanted $90+ dollars/month
I was just wondering, what do you think is a fair price to charge for lessons, where do you draw the line, should prices be affordable for everyone or should it be higher because it's someone making a living? etc.
Tom
In regard to your question about charges for classes, I trained at a Wing Chun School in Metro Atlanta and I believe it was $60 per month with classes four days per week @ 1 1/2 hrs per class. At the present school, I attend it is quite a bit more pricey ($135 mo. for five classes per week/$170 mo. for unlimited classes. At this particular school the classes offered were Wing Chun, Jun Fan, Kali, Muay Thai, Jiu-Jitsu and Savate, so if you had the time and inclination you could find value even at that price.
I found myself going to about seven classes per week or 28 per month, so for me it was a good value. It depends on what you want, how much time you can committ, what you can afford and the level of instruction as to whether or not the price offered is fair.
I also go to Krav Maga School in Atlanta for $10 per visit. I go there for the fellowship and conditioning for the most part, however, I have found quite a few similiarities in Jun Fan/JKD and Krav Maga. I hope this helps, but remember Atlanta has 5 million people, so it can be expensive. Additionally, there simply are not a lot of Wing Chun or JKD Schools around.
When I was having classes during the week, I was charging $50.00 a month for one night a week, and $80.00 a month for two nights a week. I taught one seminar a month. For those who wanted to include the seminar in their monthly dues, I gave them an additional discount off the seminar fee, and they paid $120.00 a month. Most people think that is quite reasonable, especially for LEGITIMATE Jeet Kune Do training!
Im a FIRM believer in you get what you pay for in this world. I will pay more for a person I believe will get me where I want to be, rather than less for someone who knows a little bit of this and that...if yanno what I mean.
I believe that you get what you pay for too. But the only only problem with me is that not everything is in my price range. I've seen teachers that are all competent but some just have much higher fees than others.
Also, what do you guys think of the idea of having to pay for 3 months in advance for the training fees? Personally I think that it can be good and bad. Many people will let you try a free class for free, but after that you have to sign up, which is unfortunate if you are still hesistant about paying all that money in advance for an art that you are not sure about.
It's good if they offer both a 1 month payment or a 3 month payment and offer a discount for signing up for 3 months instead of 1.

Your fees definitely sound reasonable for sure, especially considering what you offer.
I think if you find a good instructor he/she will probably work with people who are less fortunate in their finances. That is something I would do anyways.
That is very true, provided that they are a GOOD Instructor! I have worked with many people who are less fortunate financially, and will continue to do so!
I agree with just about everything here! I don't mind paying for quality, and I'm sure you guys are the same. Whatever an instructor charges, my one proviso is BE WORTH IT!
