I know I can use my imagination...but are there any Springarm Drill suggestions that can be described in writing?
I installed mine with a Wallbag at Face Height and the Springarm on Center Line at my Shoulder Height (Arm socket) so I will be FORCED to keep my Bong Sao elbow nice and high! Then I have a long 3 section wallbag hung below the Springarm. I plan to add a surface for shin kicks...2x4 or half tire.
So far I am doing...
Push/Shuffle entry to: Cross Pak-Bil Jee, Tan Da, Bong-Cross Lop-Backfist (CAREFULLY with the Springarm!)
Simple Direct Attack: wedging Lead hand while striking Bil Jee, Palm, Chung Choi etc...
Switching hands while maintaining attachments: Outer Lop-Lead Punch then move Lead hand to cross Pak and punch with rear hand (if you screw this up, you get HIT!). Tan-Da to cross Pak-Da
There are a wide variety of drills that you can do involving sliding leverage strikes (both bil jees and chung chuies), tan saos, jut saos, jom saos, fook saos, woang paks and huen saos. Just get creative and flow. You will be amazed by what all you can come up with on your own. I just bought a new digital video recorder yesterday. I will be experimenting with it some this week, and hopefully shooting the DVD on how to use the springarm very soon!
I used 3/4" Galvanized Pipe
(1) 12" 'nipple', (1) 3" nipple, (1) 16" section, (2) 45 Degree Elbows and (2) Flanges.
One Flange mounts to the wall, add 3" Nipple, 45 Deg Elbow, 12" Nipple, 45 Degree Elbow, 16" Pipe, other Flange mounted to Floor.
I wrapped it in Rubber Pipe Insulation and wrapped that in Gaffer Tape. That is the Front Leg.
For the Back Leg I took a 2x4 board and faced it with the same Pipe Insulation and wrapped it with Gaffer Tape.
Then I screwed that to the wall under the Flange for the Front Leg.
With this you can practice Obliques, Stomps, Side/Stop Kicks, Leg Checks.
You can Reap the front Leg and then side kick the back leg etc...
Hey buddy, Your spring arm sounds good. Do you mind sending some pictures to my email? (I just sent you one by the way). I am trying to get a mental picture of what you created so one day after this radio job starts off (the 21st baby!) I can invest in some of Sifu's equipment.
Is the springarm intended to be a replacement for the mook jong, or a supplement? It would definitely add 'alive-ness' to dummy training. I'm saving up for mine now (And working up to convincing my wife it's good to drill holes in our garage walls hehehe!)
The springarm is a whole different animal! It is designed primarily for developing your sensitivity. Now, a mook jong with springarms adds a whole new dimension to mook jong training! It makes the dummy more "alive"! Whether you have one, two, three or four springarms (like the lin sil die dar dummy I am working on), there is always something to do with them!
To me, the Mook gives you STRUCTURE but not sensitivity.
Also, you can't truly clear the Center Line obstruction on a Mook.
The Springarm DOES allow you to move the centerline obstruction out of the way.
Also, if you don't keep your technique tight it will bounce and SMACK you in the head.
You can also practice Spring exercises, Jut Sau etc...
An interesting thing is that if you do a Sliding Leverage attack with your lead hand, the end of the Springarm is aiming right at your face. You can then get used to checking/monitoring the end of the arm with your rear guarding hand.
