Instructors,

When would you begin to include Chi Sau training with students? Is this something you get in as early as possible, or is it preferable to build up other less "subtle" tools first and introduce it later on, maybe to intermediate level students?

I think everyone here is in agreeement as to how important Chi Sau is, but in my experience (Including my own early training), it's the one thing beginners are most confused about. They don't understand how to do it, why we do it etc.

Chi Sao

July 24 2008, 7:01 AM

Hi Declan!

Chi sao is confusing regardless of when it is introduced into the training, and is going to take time to get down, so I start students on the basics of chi sao as soon as possible. Chi sao has a lot to do with how we apply our tools, so the more training someone has at chi sao, the sooner they understand how certain tools work. I guess you could say that I look at it as more of a "learn as you go" kind of thing! Hope that makes sense!

That's awesome Sifu, thanks. I know what you mean about Chi Sau being confusing, but I personally love it and I think some instructors of JKD neglect it, much to the detriment of the style. Chi Sau also has lot of benefits neurologically speaking and is great for building co-ordination and creating new neural pathways, so it's all good!

Do you advocate the instruction of forms such as Sil Lim Tao or Ung Moon to enhance understanding of Chi Sau?

Sil Lim Tao / Ung Moon

July 24 2008, 8:06 AM

Hi Declan!

Sil Lim Tao is a very important part of my curriculum, however, Ung Moon was not created by Bruce Lee, but later made up by Dan Inosanto. Therefore, yes, Sil Lim Tao is a very important part of my teachings, and very important to structural development in Jeet Kune Do!

Sil Lim Tao

July 24 2008, 10:20 AM

Hello Declan!

The Sil Lim Tao form was taught to me by Sifu Joseph I. Cowles, who originally learned it from Sijo Bruce Lee himself in the Jun Fan Gung Fu Institute in Seattle, Washington. The version of Sil Lim Tao that I teach is done the exact way that Bruce Lee executed the form. It is obvious to me that Bruce Lee learned the form from Wong Shun Leung, because the form is identical to the way that Sifu Wong did the form when he was alive.
