Focus Mitts

September 16 2008, 8:18 AM

Hi,

Focus Mitts are a great, technique/sport specific tool to work on body machinacs, learning combinations and for warming the body up for hard work. We use them all the time for learning and training in offense/defense movement such as bob/weave drills, slipping and even learning to absorb blows with body movement. I think they are fantastic for training trapping with, as well as the straightblast, elbows and knees.

One of the problems that I've seen (and I have done this in the past) is get caught up in patterns with them that are meaningless. With a good, experienced, 'feeder' who is free to move around and come at you with everything, you can do wonders with the mitts.

Oh, and before I forget, some of Lamar's guys developed something called the Focus Master. It is a great piece of training equipment for those times when you don't have a partner there to help you train.

Focus Master

The Focus Master is multi positional striking target mount that enables you to put the targets in virtually any configuration. I helped with the intial design of it, and tested all of the add ons that they came up with. Two of my students, Jim Pettit and Marty Keary are the makers of the device. Century has a conract with them now and sells the device. If you plan on getting one, better prepare for the shock to your wallet!

I could make it cheaper BUT I wouldn't call it the "FOC-US MASTER", I would call it the "FOC-U MASTER" as it would be so much cheaper :)

sorry Lamar, you know my humour gets the better of me some times :-)

Don't Think So!

September 17 2008, 8:37 AM

The work on the original Focusmaster started long ago! Jim and Marty didn't know Jerry Poteet, or really anything about him. While I had already trained with Sifu Jerry, I had never heard of such an idea, and the original started out as two 4" x 4"s mounted about a foot apart with holes drilled at different heights. The first actual Focustmaster that was for sale came out in the mid-nineties, I am thinking around 1995 or 1996. It has come a long way since then, and now the design is both aesthetically pleasing, as well as virtually indestructible!
