The thumb in Lop/Pak sau

Sifu,

May seem an obvious question, but what is the HJKD approach to the thumb when using pulling/slapping hands, etc?

I ask because until I started training with the JPJKD group, I'd always been taught that the thumb isn't used, but the Jerry Poteet school teaches to grab using the thumb.
