In the "Tao Of Jeet Kune Do" Bruce Lee describes 3 types of parries: simple, semi-circular, and circular. It say that circular parries envelope to attackers wrist in a circular motion and return it to to the original line of engagement. Just wanted to know if anyone has ever used one before and if so, what is a good way to train them? Thanks.

Huen Sao

January 7 2009, 2:23 PM

Hello Frederick!

He is referring to huen sao, or circling hand (aka small disengagement). We have many uses for huen sao! I'm sure you are quite familiar with some of them, but maybe didn't realize what was being referred to there! happy.gif

Isn't this also found in Fencing?

Dick was showing me the huen sau the last time we trained. Also a way to disengage a foil? I guess fencing and wing chun have alot in common.

Very similar. In fact take the blade away and most of the hand and arm positions look like wing chun positions. I recently copied some sections of a fencing book and substituted the words wing chun for fencing and used hand for blade. My students thought the exerpts were from a wing chun book. Bruce Lee quoted extensively from Costello"s book on fencing and applied the principles to JKD.

We may be on to something. Good find Jack. Fighting must be universal in some cases. Glad Bruce put two and two together. Makes it easy on our end.

Yes in fact some believe that in the old bare knuckle boxing days, it was the influence of fencing that brought science to the brawls and in fact was very influencial in bringing about straight hitting rather than the old roundhouse, wild swings. It is interesting to study the similarities in old school fencing, bare knuckle boxing ( it changed when gloves were introduced) and wing chun.
