sliding leverage/time hit question for SiFu Davis Lamar

Dear Sifu,

I'm a newcomer, I started browsing this forum recently, it's really informative, keep it up.

I've been practicing Wing Chun (Yip Chun stream) for nearly 10 years and researching BL's JKD with some friends for around 2 years. I found that JKD does have incorporated a lot of WC principles, sliding leverage is one of them. However at the same time, I find some points unclearly illustrated when I'm reading BL's book, time-hit is one of them.

Sifu, here are my questions:
1. Since JKD practitioners are not in a traditional WC stance, body machanics in performing a sliding leverage hit seems a bit different (this is what I feel, as we can simultaneously pivot the body about the body central axis to perform such a technique in WC in order to generate force and establish a new centre line. Please correct me if I'm wrong). Do we need to do a sidestepping when doing that in JKD?

2. I know power and timing are critical. Is it possible for a small guy to do that against a heavy punch delivered by a bigger guy?

3. Boxing techniques like bob n weave and slipping play important roles in JKD. If we can perform an excellent sliding leverage, does it mean boxing evasions become less important in JKD when dealing with a straight punch?

4. As far as I understand, a time-hit means a counterattack to close the line of the offense. Is sliding leverage one of the time-hit techniques? What other techniques can be regarded as time-hit? Can time-hit apply to kicking techniques?

Thanks

hey godwin ,

i think i can answer youre question and if im wrong Sifu davis will slap the back of my head and tell you the right thing anyway.

ok , first the sliding laverage punch i think enter in the categorie of coup d'arrèt or stop it. the way its done in jkd basicaly is that you pivot on youre rear foot when you punch so youre body will end up more sideways at the end so it makes you out of the line of attack and make youre punch harder ( thats stationary) you can do the same process but whit a small side step . about the defensive head movements they are very important cause they go whit almost every defense. Example i do a high pak sao whit my right hand so my head will slip a bit on the right side in the same time for extra safety.

i think thats pretty much it.

If you are using the same lead as your opponent,
Sliding leverage covers his opposite attacking tool without having to move.
He throws a cross and you cut in with a lead for instance.

Keep in mind that boxers (and especially bad ones) throw from the line of their shoulder and not down the middle.
Changes things quite a bit.

In theory the sliding leverage techniques works better against horizontal "Boxer" type punches? considering if they are somewhat slower than you?

yeah it works real good on horizontal punches but sliding leverage is if your to slow to intercept interception should be your first prioity if your slow on the interception then sliding leverage so it dosent matter if your opponents punch is slow its if your slow to intercept if your opponents punch is slow just hit him intercept him destroy him in seconds and run before the cops come or anyone id's you dont waste time thinking about it

Proper Body Mechanics/Time Hits

April 25 2009, 3:47 PM

Hello, and welcome to the forum!

A) Not necessarily! If you fully understand your JKD body mechanics, and how to properly torque and pivot, footwork will quite often be nothing more than wasted energy!

2. I know power and timing are critical. Is it possible for a small guy to do that against a heavy punch delivered by a bigger guy?

A) It is not the size of the person, but the proper mechanics that make the difference. Remember, Jeet Kune Do is based on highly sound, scientific principles! What works for one should work for all!

3. Boxing techniques like bob n weave and slipping play important roles in JKD. If we can perform an excellent sliding leverage, does it mean boxing evasions become less important in JKD when dealing with a straight punch?

A) I would say so! Sliding leverage (the art of "cutting into the tool") negates many things, and saves a lot of wasted motion. Too many seem to place so much emphasis on the boxing part of the WC/fencing/boxing equation. I think it is the least important of the three arts that primarily make up JKD!

4. As far as I understand, a time-hit means a counterattack to close the line of the offense. Is sliding leverage one of the time-hit techniques? What other techniques can be regarded as time-hit? Can time-hit apply to kicking techniques?

A) Sliding leverage/cutting the line IS the primary method of time hitting! You could apply the same principle to kicking, especially if you have had some chi gerk (sticking legs) training.

I hope that clears things up for you somewhat! I hope that you will visit the forum often! happy.gif
