For demonstration purposes, of course it is better if you can position the demo partner with a focus glove, assume your correct position and then fire the punch. In actual application, it is most often used with trapping, as that gives you the need for a close range strike without having to retract the hand.

would you say that the trapping part of jkd could inhance bruce lee's one inch punch?
And without the trapping part of it etc, the punch would'nt be that effective?
The primary purpose of the Trap is to remove an obstruction.
Secondary is to monitor your opponents attacking tools/tie him up.
They can also be used to disrupt his balance.
So basically...if the path is already clear for you to land a one inch punch, the use of a trap would mostly serve to protect you from a counter punch.
And if you are close enough to throw a one inch punch, you should be 'monitoring' your opponents hands.
I'm sure you have heard the phrase, "there is a time and a place for everything!" Well, that statement definitely holds true for trapping and the one inch punch. Chances are, if you can land a clean strike, there will be no need for the one inch punch. However, if you attempt to strike and the opponent obstructs your line of attack, then the one inch punch can come in quite handy, as you can apply the short range striking mechanics developed from extensive training of the one inch punch. Trap the limb that is obstructing your attack, and continue the strike right from where it was stopped, using "inch power" to get full power into the close range punch! This keeps you from having to retract to strike, which would have added another beat of timing to the attack, quite possibly giving the oponent time to counter attack. Trapping is all about shutting the opponent down while at the same time disrupting their structure, so the power developed from the one inch punch is very helpul to this process.
Sifu has illuded to the deeper concept which is expressed in the one inch punch (demo). That concept is "inch power". All strikes should contain inch power. Try not to think in terms of technique but rather in principles or concepts. Inch power involves force or power expressed for the briefest of time at a single point. The arm and hand are kept relaxed as they travel towards the target. No force is produced until the very end "last inch if you will", actually at inpact with the squeezing of the fist. The arm and hand are then instantly relaxed again. At the highest level it appears that the hand is relaxed even at impact because of how quickly it is clinched and relaxed. This concept should be applied to all strikes and in fact all traps. By staying relaxed until the moment of impact you have not overcommited should the opponent do something unexpected, and you are better prepared to change in mid stream. It is true that the structural alignment of the demo punch helps produce maximum impact and driving force but the idea behind inch power can be expressed at any range and with any technique. In reality you may not want to drive the opponent too far back. Inch power properly applied has great penetrating force to the body and can create severe damage when used to the head and throat area.
It is an awesome study which can produce continual improvement because it is not based on muscular force alone.
Just my two cents.

would you say in learning the one inch punch sets you up for the mechanics for other close range punch, for example, I use a dumbell too strenghten my arm too aply too striking...etc
also would my trapping fold without the strength of the one inch punch?
so therefore I practice the one inch punch because it give me the mechanics for other punches, mainly straight line ones, and it makes my trapping work better?
