Hello Everyone!

As most of you have noticed, there are times when I "jump right on" an answer to a question, and other times when I just "let it sit". What I am doing is giving others (especially those who have trained and are training with me) a chance to answer the question. The post about the inside slip is an example! I must say that I am QUITE PLEASED! I LOVE IT when my guys come onto the forum and give detailed, highly intelligent answers to questions asked! GREAT JOB GUYS!!!!! happy.gif

I love it too!

Dear Sifu and all,

I'm the guy who posted the topic "inside slip". Very unfortunately, my living place doesn't have any good JKD instructors. I'm learning JKD mainly by reading books, watching videos and experimenting with friends. Although I have a Wing Chun background, I always find techniques and concepts confusing, as different authors give different versions on a same technique/concept, I don't know which is the most authentic version!

First of all, a big thanks to Sifu. You've established such a nice educational forum without any access restriction so that I can freely raise questions and discuss JKD issues with you guys here. The most valuable thing is its pureness - it doesn't involve any non-JKD dicussions.

I'd also like to thank other JKD mates for your patience and explanations. Probably, my questions seem a bit silly to you, I really appreciate that you're all happy to answer them!

Regards,
Godwin

I'm from...

May 21 2009, 10:49 PM

Hi Tom,

I'm from where Bruce Lee was from - Hong Kong (and I studied in London for 5 years previously). Ironically, we don't have any proper JKD school at all, what we have are just schools teaching traditional systems, e.g. Wing Chun, Choi Lee Fat, Mantis....

Ted Wong, who is also from HK, does come to HK every year for seminars in promoting JKD, I found his JKD is quite different from what I perceive JKD is. What he demonstrated in the seminars are just like kickboxing and some tactics. I respect Ted Wong as a good martial artist, however I'm quite unhappy when he said something like "JKD has nothing to do with Wing Chun" and "having a Wing Chun foundation doesn't mean you can do JKD well".

Ted Wong has trained some private students, who have recently organised some JKD classes, please watch this video.

Do you think it's a good one? I guess it's just teaching Ted Wong's stuff.

Well,

May 22 2009, 10:44 AM

He has his hands dropped, and the guy he is sparring seems to have his mind set on sport (that and he so much shorter with less reach Kind of Unfair).

However, I do like the Ted Wong Pak Sau counter. Where you step out and do a "redoublement" and arc over the guys left hand (if he is fighting right side forward)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YNHIAvRihiI

Dave Carnell demonstrates it.

Dick Jefferies and I trained it last time. It is a cool move and isn't as complicated as multiple counter traps.

However... that counter trapping looks so much cooler ;) Don't you agree Tom?

Re: Well,

Hey Jason
Personally I think that Ted Wong Pak Sau counter is ok, but there are some things I don't agree with done in the video. For instance, I don't know of any JKD guys that lead off with their left hand trying to do a pak sau (when they're in a right lead) so that just seems like poorly done trapping. The way that I understand it is that trapping is done off of a reference point.

To do a pak sau like the one demonstrated in the video would be like training to do trapping at a far distance and without making any initial contact first, you would be leaving yourself open if you did that. To me, that's training to do training incorrectly so you're already developing bad habits and using techniques that will leave you open to counters.

Also, if you did that pak sau counter, you're doing it with the assumption that your opponent is definitely going to pak sau you with his left hand before there is any contact of the wrists. If you leaded with a lead straight instead and he did that, then you could easily have time to defend against it.

The counter that I really like to the pak sau is the tan da, you're doing a simple counter and you're going off of contact.

But to answer your question Jason, yes I think counter trapping looks a lot more cool happy.gif

A lightbulb went off. You're right, that would be a bad habit to assume the guy is going to Pak Sao. Reminds me of this video.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HvrpDc6PmVM

When there is no obstruction, no need for the Pak. And what a good eye you have Tom, I clicked the HQ viewing button and lo and behold, dude tried to go for the trap before the hit???

Craziness, especially against ol Diamond Dave. Thats asking to get hit.

Re: Well,

I don't LEAD with a Pak per se but I have crashed the line with a Pak Da in sparring a LOT.
Kind of hard to explain but I base the attack on the "Shape" of the Defense.
I am anticipating his Cover/Defense.

Another one I have used many times is a Lan Sau Da (over a Low Guard) and then Scooping his elbow and Punching ("The Dempsey Shift"....it is also a Wing Chun Technique but can't remember what it is called...Cow Sau? Cup Sau?)

Basically....If I already know where the obstruction WILL be, I can preemptively go after it on the way in.
