How do you motivate yourself to train, when you are not feeling it?

I thought I would throw out the above question for public consumption as I am struggling mightily today. Monday, besides being the first day of the work week, is my longest day of the week.

I get up at 5:30, leave for work at 6:30, get here at 7:15 and have three martial art classes from 6:30-9:30. I have no energy today, but my gear is packed. I want to go, but I am struggling and need motivation to make the right turn on the forked road. How do you get past this training roadblock.

Yes, I do have my handy dandy 5 hr energy, but trying to ween myself off it. I enjoy all the classes, don't get me wrong, but it makes a late monday, groggy Tuesday, then do it again Wednesday and done until one class Saturday. I know many of you guys keep a heavy schedule too and just want to know how you MAKE YOUR BUTT GET TO CLASS?

I need some help my martial arts brothers.

PS- will sure take a look at my diet and improvements there

Motivation

June 15 2009, 5:51 PM

Jeff,

I travel a ton for work today for example & I was on the road at 4:30 am and just got home and I have to work out then another hour of work. For me just getting something in, any kind of jkd workout (punching, kicking, footwork) is better than nothing. I usually put a movie in or music which helps take my mind off how tired I am. Once I get going I usually perk up some. Hope that helps.

Power Naps!!

June 15 2009, 9:07 PM

I used to Power Nap when I got home from work and before my workouts. This pushed back my exercising into the later hours of the night but my body appreciated the rest. It would alleviate complete exhaustion for the next day.
Recovery time for you body is just as important as the time spent working out.

Look at you training schedule on busy days train things which are less physically demanding: sensitivity, footwork,..etc.

Pretend that your teacher and all your training opportunities would go away if you aren't there.

Maybe your body is trying to tell you something

Maybe back off training a little sometimes. It's hard to do, when you have goals, but sometimes some rest is what you need.

I agree with Eric.

I have noticed forcing myself to do something when I am not feeling it, causes burn out and stress. In addition it actually hinders my growth instead of encouraging it.

I have found out training a little at a time in a steady pace, vs. being all high strung and intensity does my body better and keeps me CONSISTENT.

Rome wasn't built in a day as my Preacher used to say.

Oh, Caffeine and being surrounded by Beautiful Women seem to help me and Dick. LOL

Peace and God Bless.

Jeff,
First, after 36 years of training I still enjoy training.
That helps. However I set goals for myself. There is an objective and a realistic time frame. Be specific. Post it where you can see it. Every time I feel like slacking or am tired, I am reminded that I must train to meet my goal. I used to train with a friend that gave me a lot of trouble when we practiced chi sao. I finally got tired of it and set a goal to best him 60% of the time within 4 months. This motivated me to train and also helped me to focus that training towards specific areas that needed improvement. I achieved my goal which really encouraged me and that in turn provided more motivation because of the sense of accomplishment. At other times I am motivated because of some discovery I have made when investigating the depth of the art. These discoveries help keep me training.
These work for me.
Jack
