Evidence of trapping post-1967

To expand upon the statement made by Joe Lewis regarding Bruce Lee being "really big on" trapping in 1968...

1968 Joe Lewis states that Lee emphasized "sticky hand movements" when he trained with Bruce from 1968-1969.

1969 Bruce Lee was teaching chi sao to both Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and James Coburn.

1970 Bruce Lee sparred with several of Yip Man's students during his initial visit to Hong Kong.

1973 Bob Wall states that Bruce Lee knee-trapped and followed up with a retaining trap of the arms of an extra on the set of Enter the Dragon. Bruce proceded to bloody the face of this challenger with a series of quick punches.

Sifu Lamar Davis clearly has documented fact on his side when presenting the case for Wing Chun being an integral part of JKD during the latter portion of Bruce Lee's life.

Bremer's admission

August 3 2009, 9:30 PM

In a 1993 interview, Chinatown Era student Bob Bremer recalled viewing a tape on Wing Chun techniques and realizing that JKD was very similar to Wing Chun. Prior to seeing the tape, Bremer thought that what Bruce was teaching him was completely unique.

Thanks Philip!

There are also many photos taken on the set of ENTER THE DRAGON where Bruce Lee is clearly demonstrating chi sao and trapping techniques to John Saxon! How much closer to "the end" could photo evidence be?

Impressions of Joe Lewis

August 4 2009, 12:07 PM

Sifu Davis: I have never seen the photographs of Bruce Lee teaching John Saxon chi sao. Thank you for sharing that information. It amazes me that so many JKD instructors feel comfortable stating that Wing Chun wasn't an important part of the art after Bruce Lee opened his school in Chinatown.

They must know that Lee was teaching Wing Chun techniques to all of his Hollywood students in the late 60's which included Stirling Silliphant, Steve McQueen, and James Coburn. Heck, there is a scene in Longstreet where Lee is doing chi sao with James Franciscus. Stirling Silliphant wrote the screenplay and I would assume that Bruce Lee had some input in that process.

I'm also assuming that most JKD instructors know about Bob Wall's recollection of one of Lee's fights on the set of Enter the Dragon. There is Bruce Lee, in the Spring of 1973, using trapping techniques in a REAL fight. So much for the silly "trapping doesn't work" argument.

Almost forgot

Sifu Davis: I was curious about your impressions of Joe Lewis during the time when you trained with him?

Joe Lewis

August 6 2009, 6:07 AM

Joe Lewis is definitely one of the most explosive martial artists that I have ever had the pleasure of being around. He definitely was not much on the trapping though! We taught together at a training camp in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida once. I taught trapping and Joe taught kickboxing basics. He did say that he was impressed with my trapping skills, and could see how what I was doing could work very well in a self defense situation!
