Dedication ... Where Has It Gone?

Hello Everyone!

Here I am, in the very first few days of the new year, already having to think about the possibility of closing the Leeds location! Why, you might ask? Well, it is due to people not doing what they tell me they will do, and due to the serious lack of dedication that seems to exist apparently with almost everything these days! Jeet Kune Do is an art that requires dedication. Dedication to (1) attending as many classes as you possibly can and (2) supplementing that training with personal training time, DVD study and seminars. The students who progress the fastest and gain the quickest understanding of the art are those who do ALL of the above! OK, yes, I know that many of you are only in it for learning some basic self defense. That is OK too, but it still requires some dedication, at least to attending the classes that are offered to you! With the start of the new year, do me a BIG favor and make a resolution to be more involved in your training, and to become the best JKD practitioner that you can possibly be! That is all that I ask of you, and I certainly don't think that is too much to ask! See you at class Monday night! happy.gif

Sweat in the Gym so you dont Bleed in the Street.

January 3 2010, 3:44 PM

Hi Sifu,
sadly i understand, as i too have been in this situation.
It takes a lot of your own effort in setting up and maintaining a club
not to mention the financial aspect.

Being completely honest with your students reading this, JKD is not a once
per week or fortnight thing.
Nor is it something that one can become proficient in without putting in
the hours in the gym. Sweat in the gym so you dont Bleed in the street.

Once in a while doesn't cut it, you may be attacked in the street and not have the fitness,
skill set, sharpness, timing and a whole lot more!. End result?.......you lose!.

Wake up and do yourselves a favour, you have one of the best in Sifu.
Make the most of it and maybe you will see why JKD is not a weekly
session but a way to a better life!.

2010 make it good, Make it There.

i agree with both of you. when i moved back here to illinois from florida i let it be known my background in martial arts to possibly stir up some people to train with. i would get alot of "yeah, id love to learn martial arts" from people who would never show. finally i stopped asking. i recently started training with a fellow in moy yat ving tsun and his own version of martial art he calls satori ryu. he told me the same thing. he has seen many people who say they want to learn but never come around. or come around once or twice then stop. he and i have a mutual friend who loves mma but doesnt want to train for it properly.
over the years i have been in and out of various schools but i trained at home when i wasnt in a school. i spent time reading and studying arts from books because of a lack of a decent school. here in the midwest, especially where i live now, the closest jkd school is in chicago, which is two hours away.
one of the problems i am seeing, at least in my own life, is the work schedule. i was working 2-11 for three years when i first moved here. and it was never set days off. the work force is really sucking these days. alot of jobs where i live are only hiring part time so you need two jobs to keep going and that leaves you little time for anything else. you might have time to train at home with weights if you are really dedicated, or a personal workout if you have the room and equipment, but most people enjoy the experience of training with others in a class environment. i know i have come to enjoy that.
i am working now toward getting back into teaching. i have one student and am taking lessons as well. my goal is to have a small group at first so that i can share my knowledge and develop students skills so we can put on demos, and hopefully get more students this way. i want a small school which would allow me to host seminars by some of the local jkd people, here in illinois, and eventually grow to host seminars by men like sifu davis.
the other thing i have noticed is that people dont want to put in the effort for personal growth. they want belts and certificates and awards but dont want to work for them. without the work they have no meaning. i hope this type of mentality doesnt prevail.

Hi Sifu Lamar

Happy new year! :) dont feel disencourage ; you have excellent instruction and what you said seem to be the nature of teaching . I once read a martial arts survey that there is usually 5 serious students out of every 100, this seems to be true as I have many discussions with different teachers thr the years. And it is how i approach it now . Dont feel down, I am sure it will get better!!!

Things are much better here already! I had a meeting with the landlord and got the rent for the school cut nearly in half! So, in other words, FULL SPEED AHEAD with everything! We're here to stay! happy.gif
