Quoting Sam: I just can`t grasp how a fight couldn't turn out to be like a match if both the attacker, and the person getting attacked, were at a challenging state. I mean if someone blind sided me, and I pushed them back making them go to the on guard position, that is the same place where you are at in Sparring! If they have skills boxing, and feel comfortable boxing you around they will!
That is just it! There is no "match", and certainly no "match mentality"! There is no "challenging state", only DESTROY what is in front of you intending to cause you harm! Also, there should be no "blind siding you"! You should be always aware of everything around you, and the potential threat if there is one! All this takes is being alert and observant of who and what is around you! There should also be no "same place where you are at in sparring", because sparring is about PRACTICE WITHOUT DOING DAMAGE TO YOUR PARTNER! This is ALL ABOUT your combat mindset, NOT about "pretend fighting", which is kind of what sparring is! This is the main reason that I have always said that HIGH INTENSITY DRILLS and training on equipment is way more valuable to the Jeet Kune Do practitioner than sparring! You have to get out of this "sparring" and "competition" B.S. mindset, and concentrate on REAL WORLD SELF DEFENSE, which is what we are all about! Once again, Jeet Kune Do is NOT mixed martial arts! It is not about competition or "who is better than who"! It is all about self defense in the REAL WORLD, not on the mat or in the ring!
