Training JKD properly

Hey guys

This is to add on from a previous post, Sifu was talking about how to train to box with someone is not training the JKD objective which is to train to destroy your opponent. I think this makes for an interesting discussion. I agree with this, however, how does one go about training without falling into the trap of sparring with your opponent? Do you want to train constant forward pressure, aggressive trapping, full power shots to focus mitts where a vital target such as the groin would be? etc. I guess we could all use some guidelines to follow to make sure that our training isn't counter productive to ourselves.

Thanks
Tom

I agree should make for a good Topic

I`m being a little stuburn at this point but Im open for opinions all day long. Right now I`m really starting to see what Sifu is talking about, but I just can`t grasp how a fight could`nt turn out to be like a match if both the attacker, and the person getting attacked were at a challenging state.I mean if someone blind sided me,and I pushed them back making them go to onguard position that is the same place where you are at in Sparring! If they have skills boxing, and feel comfortable boxing you around they will! But if they commit to an all out attack then you are getting the energy you train for. I just don`t get it at this point.Maby Sifu will straighten this up for me,and you can get the info you asked for so that I can learn with you!

Quoting Sam: I just can`t grasp how a fight couldn't turn out to be like a match if both the attacker, and the person getting attacked, were at a challenging state. Hi Guys!

That is just it! There is no "match", and certainly no "match mentality"! There is no "challenging state", only DESTROY what is in front of you intending to cause you harm! Also, there should be no "blind siding you"! You should be always aware of everything around you, and the potential threat if there is one! All this takes is being alert and observant of who and what is around you! There should also be no "same place where you are at in sparring", because sparring is about PRACTICE WITHOUT DOING DAMAGE TO YOUR PARTNER! This is ALL ABOUT your combat mindset, NOT about "pretend fighting", which is kind of what sparring is! This is the main reason that I have always said that HIGH INTENSITY DRILLS and training on equipment is way more valuable to the Jeet Kune Do practitioner than sparring! You have to get out of this "sparring" and "competition" B.S. mindset, and concentrate on REAL WORLD SELF DEFENSE, which is what we are all about! Once again, Jeet Kune Do is NOT mixed martial arts! It is not about competition or "who is better than who"! It is all about self defense in the REAL WORLD, not on the mat or in the ring!

Hi Sifu

What kind of high intensity drills do you find to be most practical to train JKD? Also, how do you feel is the best way to practice trapping with a partner? Do you feel that it's best to practise trapping by actually trying to get penetration on your punch by aiming for your partner's face but your partner works on his cover? I like what you said before how to make trapping effective you need to work on energy/sensitivity, mook jong/spring arm training, partner drills etc.

I'm loving the mindset idea that we should have, now we just have to make sure that our training is geared towards this happy.gif

EVERY DRILL!!!!

September 29 2010, 5:24 PM

Hi Tom!

Every drill that we do should be done with the high intensity mindset! For trapping, if you truly want to get intense, you must punch just past the partner's face, because if you really do it right, they cannot defend, so you would probably lose a lot of training partners, and have to hire a good attorney to cover your attempted lawsuits! happy.gif

LOL

September 29 2010, 5:29 PM

Haha Sifu I don't want to hire a good attorney wink.gif

Do you mean that you want to practice getting the penetration on the punch by just punching slightly to the side of their head? Or do you think it's a good idea for your training partner to move their head out of the way before you trap? Otherwise I think if you do it right they won't be able to get out of the way of your punch in time happy.gif

Thanks
Tom

Penetration

September 29 2010, 5:52 PM

Hi Tom!

The idea is for you to barely miss their face. What I mean is for you to punch JUST PAST the partner's face, as in six to ten inches of pentration, meaning that if you really hit them, your fist would nearly go through their head! happy.gif
