Trapping Hand Controversy Continues

The controversy over the importance of trapping skill continues! Sorry, but JKD without the trapping elements isn't JKD at all! It might be kickboxing with the power side forward, but that's about it! One of Bruce Lee's Five Ways of ATTACK is HIA, or Hand Immobilization Attack! The Five Ways of Attack are an integral part of the Jeet Kune Do structure! Whether you use trapping or not, USING IT and KNOWING IT are two completely diferent things!

The point I am making is that in order for it to be JKD, the trapping has to be there! You may get into five altercations in a row and never have to USE trapping! However, if it were to be needed, do you KNOW trapping? Better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it! For anyone to know of Bruce Lee's Five Ways of Attack and still say that trapping is not a part of JKD is just a show of blatant ignorance! That is the simple truth!

dumbasses are...

February 26 2011, 7:55 PM

dumbasses. Let them say it is not needed or follow the ignorant path of believing the lie that Bruce was doing away with trapping or the Chi sao needed to help with this when in close fighting. Let them follow the same path and when they need it they can either dance or get knocked out. Let them be dumbasses. Let them be lazy and ignorant and not learn JKD. Let them learn dancing with the powerside forward and an ocassional finger jab. Let them learn to do a fifty yard sprinting straight blast. Let them learn from a fake that will put them in the grave, let them learn the wrong way, let them learn a substance that will only let them think they know JKD. Let them be dumbasses.

Let thise that know; know. Let those that can read and understand my post understand. Let those that can't either learn or be a *******.

Kent

let them find out.

sifu
you are so on point! i have proven time and time again at my school that trapping and in close range powerful striking works. grab a hold of a j.k.d practioner or advanced wing chun practioner
and find out how far that gets you. it gets you hurt! the trapping range is the range people are afraid to get into,so we as functional trappers or h.i.a. get them in that range before they know it. as a result they dont know what hit them.i think personally that people that say they study j.k.d. and do not spend hours doing lop sao bong sao drills, and sensitivity drills, and learning how to intercept your advisaries movenments through interaction.are just kickboxers, using the powerside forward concept.Jeet Kune Do is the way of the intercepting fist. how do you intercept a advisaries movement if you have not spent hours training on sensitivity.you can not do a killer nerve strike on a attacker in a big winter jacket. but you can dam sure trap him!
take care
christopher.

Trapping

March 3 2011, 5:29 PM

I suck at hand trapping. There, I said it. I know that if I had more time to train in that aspect of the art, I could become very good at it. I am much more proficient in the kickboxing aspects of JKD. However, I think that that is where people go wrong. They assume that because they are not proficient in the area of trapping that no one can be. This is a very arrogant way of viewing a martial art. I believe that Bruce Lee wanted people to find the area in JKD that they were best at and refine that skill. However, that is very different from saying that because I am good in one area I should abandon all others. For instance, if I were a student in school, it would be very unhealthy for me to declare that because I am very strong in Math that I should abandon studying all other subjects. I would fail in school and I would be a very narrow minded student. In the same vein if I am very strong in the area of kicking, it would be unhealthy for me to abandon punching, trapping, or grappling. I would be a very narrow minded fighter. I would also be a very easy target for someone who studies their victim before they attack them. Now I don't believe that Bruce Lee wanted us to have fourteen thousand tools in our toolbox to use, but I do believe that he wanted us to have a "simple" choice of variety when it came to fighting. We need to know an efficient few number of striking techniques. We need to have an efficient few number of trapping techniques. We need to have an efficient few number of grappling techniques. All of these techniques being simple and direct. Sorry to rant, but I just wanted to speak my mind. However, sometimes I am accused that my mind isn't right.

My trapping isn't the best either, Joey - but I'm training it just about every day! It's definitely not a reason to stop training it. If anything, it's more.

This isn't to say that everyone who doesn't train Chi Sao and trapping as part of their JKD is like that because they're no good at it. The reasoning is irrelevant, however.

JKD without trapping is NOT JKD. (If JKD is NOT anything!)
