The vertical fist is based on the principle of the power line and taking the most direct route to the target. All major joints move in a straight line from the start of the punch to the completion, therefore enabling more overall power transfer into the target with an extremely direct nontelegraphic delivery.
The power line theory still applies, but to effectively strike the eyes you must rotate the hand at the wrist. The important thing with the bil jee is to avoid leading with the elbow (allowing the elbow to flare out, which is extremely telegraphic).
The following photos show correctly delivered bil jee strikes.
There is also the inverted bil jee, normally executed to the throat.
Here is a sequence showing proper execution of the bil jee.
Notice the "directness" of the strike. No wasted motion whatsoever!

I've noticed that a LOT of people seem to have eyes that are horizontally oriented, so it really makes sense that a horizontal attack would be appropriate.
Would it also be correct to assume that any "loss of power", resulting from striking horizontally, would be of little consequence since, it seems, that the eyes (of a LOT of people), seem to be very "sensitive" targets?

"Some people are alive only because it is illegal to kill them."
I WAS going to ask if it would be OK to deliver a VERTICAL Bil Jee to the eyes if I were to encounter a combatant who's eyes were vertically oriented, but after a bit of thought, I now think a more suitable action would be to simply run away (I'd take a few pics or, perhaps later, do some nice drawings of the creature).

Keith, I see that in your signature that you desire to kill people. Are people being taught to be murderers at this school? This is a very negative thing. Martial arts should be promoting life, not death.
Keith Buckner is one of the nicest guys that you will ever meet! His signature simply illustrates the state of things today, and how little people actually know, compared to what they profess to know! In other words, a bit of sarcasm! Keith has no desire to do harm to anyone! If he were the kind of person that you indicated in your post, he would NOT be training at my kwoon! I have a screening process that eliminates the possibility of people with ill intent training with me! Just that simple! All of my people are really good people, just learning REAL WORLD self defense, with no hopes or intent of ever using that knowledge on anyone! Just being prepared, that's all!
Well I'm glad to see that your sifu condones a negative and murderous attitude in his students. I'm also glad to see that your ego is highly functioning.
The simple answer as to why a vertical fist is better bone structure. If you are going to do pressups on your knuckles you do them with a vertical fist. Ifyou dont you can feel the extra strain on the wrist. Also to have a horizontal fist means the elbow moves out from the body. if this happens you loose strength. if you curl a weight your elbows stay in. Ontop of that throw 3 punches as fast and hard as you can against a target. The vertical fist is faster by a long shot.
The first class I ever attended with Sifu Davis had a huge impact on me as a martial artist. While drilling a technique, a student asked Sifu the question, "What if the attacker runs away? I won't be able to complete the technique." In response Sifu stated to him, "You let him run away. Always give an attacker the option to run away if he has a change of heart about attacking you." Those are definitely not the words of a Sifu who supports murderous intentions in his students.
