I saw this Ad on the website that I used to promote the workshop that we had last Saturday. I shake my head in disbelief:

"I am in search of a martial arts student/teacher that is willing to teach basics to two 5 year olds near in mississauga near mavis and eglington. Willing to offer $6/hour. Please email me. Dont need to be a qualified teacher at all."

I think it's funny that "Mavis and Eglington" is literally a block away from the studio that we had our workshop at. And $6/hour to teach your five year old self defense? You cheap @#%$$#@!!! Min wage here is $10/hour! Not that I was going to start teaching 5 year olds JKD, but the value of learning Martial Arts is so low in people's minds, no wonder MA schools struggle to keep the doors open!

Our workshop was $20 for 3 hours. Which equals $6.67/hour, and we had 3 instructors on hand!! We weren't looking to make money, just looking for interested new practitioners, and I think we found some good ones!

I could rant forever on this, but I think I'll leave it at that.
I'd love to hear some opinions on this ad, or the topic in general.

That is REALLY SAD! Someone that would teach for $6.00 per hour would not be worth even that, or would have to have extremely low confidence and self esteem! $6.00 and hour is a flat out insult! Teaching kids is not easy at all, and this is someone who really doesn't care about the kids anyway. You can tell by the way the ad is worded!

I've known some wonderful martial arts teachers to teach for free...

Yes Daniel, and so have I! Some have a secure income from another job, and do martial arts as more of a hobby. But, you probably wouldn't see them going to someone's home to teach their children! They might have a group of people that come over to their house to train once or twice a week. I enjoy sharing my knowledge, and have often wished that I could just teach for free. Of course I would become even more serious about my screening process! The main issue here is that the parents didn't think more of their kids that to post such a thing!

Like I said, I'm not about to teach a 5 years old JKD, but I think I would rather teach for free than lower myself to collect $6/hour. I know that might not make sense to some.

If my JKD teaching is worth anything, I would hope that it would save someone's life, or improve their self-worth. That is worth alot more to me than most amounts that people would be willing to pay to learn.

I'm pretty sure that I haven't made "dime one" of profit through teaching, and I'm ok with that.
