This is what I found....

When I used the program:

In 'Test Mode', 'RF Power' my 3101 was set at 70 out of a possible 256.

I could not find anywhere else to view or change anything that remotely looked like it might have anything to do with power output.

I thought that 70/256 was a strange figure if 70 represents 0.5W and 256 represents the maximum possible of 5.0W.

I increased the 70 figure to 130, thinking that 130 would be half of 256, so therefore 2.5W, a rough test of the new settings showed no real gain in performance.

This week I've been speaking to a kenwood guy who told me that the new PMR 3101's have a max poss wattage of only 2.0W.

I don't know if this is true, but it would make sense of the 70/256 figures, as 70 is about 25% of 256 and 0.5W is 25% of 2.0W. Therefore my unit could be a 2.0W max radio.

Does anyone have a definitive answer?

Is there a simple way to test the real Wattage output of a radio?

The external aerial kit has worked a treat, but is a completely different issue to the power setting.
