Binatone-Cobra comparison

by

We would like to buy a cheap twin radio set to be used on holiday, nothing fancy but best value for money if possible.

I found two models for exactly the same price:

Binatone MR200
Cobra MT500

Can anyone advise me which is the better one?

Any tips much appreciated.

TOPCOM TWINTALKER 6000

by

Hello,

I just bought me an Twintalker 6000 Combo set from TopCom.
I tested a little bit and it was very disapointing.
From 2 houses seperated with 700 Meters, the Twintalkers arn't working anymore.Even 1000 Meters in open field is pretty heavy for the units.

I also noticed that the display can do more then it does now.Maybee someone has some hidden features for this model? thx in advance

It now has 5 watts on any frequency from 48 - 1000 Mhz.

Just tried it on 446. Seems to work ok.

Will be trying it on a beam soon !

Anyone out there in North Yorkshire listening ?

Anyone got the te145/157 mod to work?

by Rob H

I have seen the te145 rigs for £29 per set in my Currys. Has anyone managed to get the 145/157 mod to enable FRS/KPD and 70cm bands to work properly, ie RX and TX. I have seen the vco mod but does it work?
Just need to know before I shell out £29 on them

Using the supplied mod from Delboy's site I have enabled the band select on both my te145s. I can transmit on PMR as usual and also on the KDR bands as well but I cannot get the LPD bands ro RX or TX. But it happily TX/RX on KDR channels.
Anyone else had any luck?

The handy in the picture its a Tti-122, also known as FLYTALK LOOK.The schematic in my web page ive got from inet, sorry i dont remeber where, it seems to be valid for Twin Talker 3000 as stated in the schematic but also works the same way with my FLYTALK LOOK (Tti-122)

About my PMR im sorry but i dont know any mods, in the other hand, im happy with it as it is and my goal is to
obtain maximun distance with the original power but increasing antenna performance. Its so easy to home-make an antenna for 446Mhz!

Your Forum

by Davey

I read about your fourm and pop-ups etc, all you need to do is find some1 that is willing to PHPBB or vBullient Fourm. These forums are add-free VVERY good and are set up and uploaded on your webspace

Other good things about them are u can set it so that members have to sign up so u dont get ne spam etc, or like now have it so dont need to sign up. You will get far much more admin control, and you can also give members that sign up admin control or modorator, well people you know and trust of course, which in end, makes the forum alot better and spam free.

you can have sigs - sigs are little picture people can add to the end of these message as a sign, like you see on gaming forums etc, look on, http://www.nightstalkers.co.uk, or http://www.no3hq.net as an exsample of there forums, the forums can also be skined, which means to match the website , these forums have a much better and clear layout also.

Anyways, just thought i'd let u no, if u post a post delboy asking some1 to help, im sure some1, there r plenty of gr8 people out there!

I dont want a forum that you have to Sign Up to that's for sure. I like the informal style of this forum but I do hate the pop ups that some people seem to get.

I must admit that I dont seem to get nearly as many pop ups as other people. Maybe I have my internet settings just right but I only get the occasional pop up !

One important thing is to ignore ANY pop up that asks you to download software. You do not need to install any software to use this forum. My forum provider appears to be trying to get me to cough up some dosh in exchange for stopping the pop ups, You'd think they'd be happy with all the advertising revenue as this site is one of their most popular forums !!!

I am currently getting over 1000 visits per day !!!

Anyway the forum's here - Use it if you want - After all it's free !

I've heard reports that the audio is dull and not loud enough for noisy areas. What do you think of the audio? Do you have any other comments on the radio, good or bad, as i'm thinking of buying a pair when they are available in the UK next month. Also, do they have tone decode facility and do they scan all the codes programmed for each channel or without tones?

TE 150 TRANSMIT/RECEIVE PROBLEM

by Rob

I recently purchased a TELCOM TE150 from eBay. It has been modded to allow it to receive extra channels. However it does not transmit or receive in PMR mode. I assume that it doesnt work in the other modes too, but cant test this. I have tried the radio with my existing Oregon TP-326 (codes on and off) and nothing happens.

Is there anything obvious worth checking before I send it back?

Thanks in advance

Re: te150 converted tx but no rx, any ideas please
by Per Mårtnesson SM0UAX

The voltage on the oscillator is to low.
On the small PCB there is a little hole. Behind it there is a coil try to make the windings closer. You can measure the VCO voltage on a via just down left from the hole ( a long stripe makes a turn around this via). You will have round or below 0.5v and you can increase it by pressing the coil together

SM0UAX

Re: te150 converted tx but no rx, any ideas please

great, thank you, wonderful, may i email delboy to ask him to put it on the mod page as it seems to be a vital part of the modification, i squuezed the coil together and it worked straight away, what can i say, many thanks regards....ken

I have had a good look through your forum and noticed peoples advice. It seems that the coil on mine has already been pressed together. And this problem seems to be affecting both TX and RX in PMR mode. I havent been able to verify the other modes.

I have looked right throuh this forum and this seems to be a new problem.

They guy I bought it from is happy to replace the radio so it's not desperate.

CB / PMR / C.C.T.V. / PROJECTS IN BRIGHTON.

by

What with confusing new laws for mobile phone users, it could give a ray of life back to the CB / PMR / 2-Way radio users. Speed traps and Speed Cameras are realy getting heavey in Sussex, in fact Sussex has more cctv car cameras than anywhere else in the UK.
I think this is why so many people are using there CBs again. I am working "slowly" with local CB'rs who are helping me log all the cameras onto a digital online map!, this is going to take a while but as soon as ive got a basic graphic up, i'll post up the address,ok people will be able to email me updates.Lots more people using PMR as well, must be MAplin in Brighton that does it! so ive started a few projects, made a PMR dipole out of a DAB aerial for Sunday DX, so if anyones around Brighton put out a shout on CHANNEL 8 CTCSS 8 for KAOS!, also monitor 19, & 27.555, 2meters & 70cms are dead in comparison. I'll be having a go at my foundation licence in January i hope.

TE150 - Re to your message: bands for "other radios"

by

Hi,
in Your message of feb 2002, Yuo say:
--------------------
"Extra bands in TELCOM TE-150
By Deleo
(Works on some radios)
For these three bands: PMR, LPD and KDR is not needed to open the radio. Just press the "up" and "down" button at the same time you press the "power" button. Hold them until you get the new menu. It will show you different operating modes: P, L, K, PL, LK ,PL , PLK etc. The best mode is PLK, then you will be able to select these three bands through the "Channel" menu.
Other: LO=10mw in LPD band
HI=500mw in LPD band (it may be illegal in some countries)
If you open the radio and "play" with a solder and jumpers you can get a lot of more frequencies, but not all at the same time. A Three Band is enough for me.
Sorry about my English. Deleo."
------------------
Now, I've tried to do the buttons sequence on a italian RTX, that is identic to the UK's T-150 (in Italy by GBC) and it doesen't seems to go.
I've also tried to push "Up", "Down", and ->"TX"<- buttons until turning on the RTX (preesing the "power-on button").
The menu is appeared, and I can choose one of theese operative modes: "PMR","P.K.L","K.L","P.L","P.K","LPD","KDR". I've choosed the "P.K.L" mode, as You say, and power mode "HI".
At now, I have not measured the output power to check if it's increased to 500mW in LPD band, I'll do it later...
Try it and tell to the other guys. )
This mod is intended for experimental use only. The RTX can become outlaw in some countries. Check local laws before use.
(Sorry for my English)

PMR, FRS and GMRS

by Dunston

Hi,

Whats the big problem with buying and FRS or GMRS two-way? There seems to be a lot more chioc in in the US and some have considerably longer ranges...will I be able to use them in Europe without the gendarmerei locking me up? is it illegal or just oncooth!!!

Also, will I be able to talk to those on a PMR446 two-way?

The problem is that I will only want to use it for skiing about two weeks of the year, and dont want to spend such a high price (circa 80) for a reasonable quality two-way

If you know about this stuff please let me know.

Cheers

Kenwood TK3101

Hi

I'm trying to find a way to increase the power on my TK3101.

I've read about a program kpg54d, so firstly, how can I get this program & a cable to connect to a PC to view the radio setup?

Also, what is 'tones'?

Also, can the squelch & modulation can be set via pots inside the radio?

Also, any experience in a BNC conversion for this radio?

cheers

This is what I found....

by

When I used the program:

In 'Test Mode', 'RF Power' my 3101 was set at 70 out of a possible 256.

I could not find anywhere else to view or change anything that remotely looked like it might have anything to do with power output.

I thought that 70/256 was a strange figure if 70 represents 0.5W and 256 represents the maximum possible of 5.0W.

I increased the 70 figure to 130, thinking that 130 would be half of 256, so therefore 2.5W, a rough test of the new settings showed no real gain in performance.

This week I've been speaking to a kenwood guy who told me that the new PMR 3101's have a max poss wattage of only 2.0W.

I don't know if this is true, but it would make sense of the 70/256 figures, as 70 is about 25% of 256 and 0.5W is 25% of 2.0W. Therefore my unit could be a 2.0W max radio.

Does anyone have a definitive answer?

Is there a simple way to test the real Wattage output of a radio?

The external aerial kit has worked a treat, but is a completely different issue to the power setting.

power

by pip57

hi peter...the way to test the output is to plug in a power meter[most swr metres have this]at the ant output of the meter plug in a 50 ohm dummey load ,then take your reading...

i have the cirkit dig and setup for this raidio ,and it says that the output should be 1watt [500mw erp]thats 70 out of the max...ive not yet tested mine yet ,but wach this space and i WILL let you know wot numbers give for diffrent outputs....but if yours can only give a max of 2 watts then this will be no good to you,...use the swr-power meter insted..pip57

DX Contact UK to Netherlands !!!!!

by Delboy

This morning at 08:15 (BST) I made a long distance contact from Blyth, Northumberland to Chris located in Amsterdam at an approximate distance of 322 MILES !

The conversation, which took place on channel 1, lasted for about 10 minutes and was witnessed at this end by David (M0DAD).

I had noticed that 70cms was absolutely packed with German and Dutch stations which I was able to work with only 1 watt from my home location, so I took my Motorola T6222 to the top of our local pit heap and made the contact.

Full report coming soon.

Now get yourself out and make those DX contacts you’ve always wanted !!!!!!

Record

by Delboy

I never thought to ask what radios they were using !!!

Anyway, it is still a long distance contact, and I think that the fact that MY pmr446 transmissions were received in the Netherlands means that it would be possible for a 2 way "Genuine" PMR446 contact over that distance. (For now I'll be happy with a one way distance record)

Next time I'll ask then to use standard PMR446 radios !

not even one way

by b.b..b.b.b...but

Their receive capability with a dual band antenna and amateur rig may well be better than the best 446 so far, so I don't think it can even count it as a one way record, technically. Don't get me wrong, I was really happy for you, and I'm sure you'll make it again soon, but I believe that the records should be on genuine 446s both ends. 73

Jealousy

by Dave

Me thinks someone is jealous Delboy.

I understand what he is saying but in reality you HAVE made the longest contact ever on PMR446. It would have been better if the other stations were using standard radios but it is undoubtedly an amazing achievement to get a 500mw signal to travel over such a vast distance and I’m sure that you would still have made the contact if they had been using normal radios from a good location.

In my experience you can often get a better receive signal with a handheld at the top of a hill than what you get on a home base station in your house.

Anyway, Well done Del and keep up the good work !

by huh?

Jealous? Which part of "Don't get me wrong, I was really happy for you, and I'm sure you'll make it again soon, but I believe that the records should be on genuine 446s both ends" don't you understand?

If it's not a proper 446 each end, you may as well count it as ham radio, out of band.

I'm NOT jealous! If it HAD been 446 both ends, I wouldn't quibble at all. I just think we need a level playing field, honesty, and integrity - which Delboy seems to agree with! Otherwise we might as well all use 100W and beams, and what's the point?

Re: 'ck off!

by Pete

I don't think its jealousy at all - it was an amazing contact and full credit to Delboy for making it!

But it's not a PMR446 record as it was received by a high gain antenna.

PMR446 records need to be PMR446 to PMR446. Otherwise people will start setting up beams etc.....

Oh come on lads, it's DX no matter what

by welsh warrior

Come on lads, its cracking dx by any standards isn't it? How many people use unmodified 446MHz (67cm) rigs anyway? Loads of people I know have all modified them with longer antennas, base station setups and so on. Sooner or later the so-called 'level playing field' is going to change and all sorts of records are going to be set whether we like it or not.
Let's not be pedantic and nit-picky and give the bloke credit for an excellent achievement.

not pedantic...

by sdfgsdfg

NOT picky, but if it's not standard PMR446 then it ISNT PMR446, it's just "any old radio transmitter on 446 channels". Would you like it if I fired up an amateur rig with 100W and a beam, and worked 100s of miles to all nearby countries, claiming all firsts and records along the way? Would that be fair? NO. Keep it standard and we've all got that lovely fair "level playing field". It's more interesting, friendly and challenging that way. 73.

RE: not pedantic...

by Scottie

I'll second that. Let's keep it legal.

The best way to work some DX is get you, your radio
and some spare batteries to the highest point you can find. I've worked into europe with a hand held radio
(running 5 Watts mind you) on the 70cms amateur band
from a car park that was about 1200ft high. The mode
of propagation was tropo ducting across the north sea.
There is an other amateur who lives near the bottom of
the same hill and he wasn't hearing a lot of the
stations I was with his base radio and a beam.
Height really does make all the difference.

Looks like us up here in Scotland are in with a good
chance of working the best DX, if anyone can be bothered
to climb a mountain

Cheers

Oh pull the other one

by Welsh Warrior

Give it a rest. Yes it is being pedantic. Run 100W if you want, by all means if you have the capability. We'll judge for ourselves whether it'll be a record of any sort won't we?
But as far as 'normal' 446MHz operation (if there is such a thing) then 500mW to a 2W handheld over a 335 mile path is neither here nor there it? It's a worthy achievement all the same as far as most of us are concerned and that's all that matters.
Keep up the good work all you 446'ers.

If you use 100W it IS NOT PMR446, it's just 'radio.' using a frequency at 446MHz. I'd hate to have to play any sport against you, you'd make up the rules as you went along! I guess I'd better not mention football, bwah hahahahahaha

The document referred to seems to be very specific about outlawing the use of mobile phone type devices when mobile, but, if I read it right, carefully excludes two way radios that work an any other frequencies. So use of a mobile with a hands-free may become illegal, but in-hand use of a PMR446 walkie talkie will not...?

erm..... Yep!

by

Presumably we will not see PC Plod prosecuted by his mates, when he smashes his Panda into another car because he was relaying a stolen-vehicle index-mark to control, via his fist-mike, then?

That should make the chap who was prosecuted for eating a Kit-Kat bar (while stationary at traffic-lights...)a WHOLE lot happier.

Apologies - a bit off topic, but I couldn't restrain myself.

RSGB

by Delboy

The RSGB are recommending that you carry a copy of the new regulations in your car as YOU ARE ALLOWED to operate radio equipment whilst driving. If stopped by the police they say that you should show them and politely explain that you can do this.

BUT as correctly pointed out YOU MUST be considered in FULL CONTROL of your vehicle at the time in order to avoid prosecution !

And as I stated before you cannot be considered in FULL CONTROL of your vehicle at the time if you have a microphone or handheld Radio in your hand

So..

by Delboy

Does that mean that you must ALWAYS use TWO hands to drive your car.

I.E. You can never take a hand off the stearing wheel !

Re: So..

by Hello

Basically yes that is correct, unless you are changing gear or using indicators or any other funtion that operates the car, excluding the car radio as that does not function the operation of the car. but we all know that people never usually have two hands on the wheel, i am no exception

All a matter of interpretation, but......

by Fottex

Gents, the hmso.gov paper ( http://www.legislation.hmso.gov.uk/si/si2003/20032695.htm ) is clear in this respect….
" Mobile telephones
(1) No person shall drive a motor vehicle on a road if he is using –
a) hand-held mobile telephone; or
b) a hand-held device of a kind specified in paragraph (4).

(2) No person shall cause or permit any other person to drive a motor vehicle on a road while that other person is using –
a) a hand-held mobile telephone; or
b) a hand-held device of a kind specified in paragraph (4).

(3) No person shall supervise a holder of a provisional licence if the person supervising is using -
a) a hand-held mobile telephone; or
b) a hand-held device of a kind specified in paragraph (4),
at a time when the provisional licence holder is driving a motor vehicle on a road.

(4) A device referred to in paragraphs (1)(b), (2)(b) and (3)(b) is a device, other than a two-way radio, which performs an interactive communication function by transmitting and receiving data.

6 (d) "two-way radio" means any wireless telegraphy apparatus which is designed or adapted -
(i) for the purpose of transmitting and receiving spoken messages; and
(ii) to operate on any frequency other than 880 MHz to 915 MHz, 925 MHz to 960 MHz, 1710 MHz to 1785 MHz, 1805 MHz to 1880 MHz, 1900 MHz to 1980 MHz or 2110 MHz to 2170 MHz.

(doh! i.e. all of the mobile phone bands !).

So you see, PC Plod will not in fact be nicked by his mates… and neither will anyone else – unless they are nickable for another offence – such as dangerous driving or driving without due care and attention. At present there is no offence of “driving whilst using a two-way radio”. Of course if you are behaving like an idiot, or they are intent on nicking you anyway, no matter what, then they will find another charge with which to haul you up before the beak.

What constitutes full control.......?

by Fottex

........ I have seen quite a few cars driven by disabled people who are using a knob on the steering wheel to facilitate one handed steering. Are they considered to be 'not in full control of their vehicle, I wonder?

I also know quite a few 'knobs' who are not in full control of their vehicle EVER, even with both hands on the wheel!

Unfortunately 'ability' and 'skill' do feature in the equation used to compute the degree of control. If one-handed operation = 'not in control' then (as another poster has already mentioned) the manual gear-shift car is destined for early retirement!

Hmmmmm. I don't think so somehow.
Regards to all. Be safe.
