Kind of Love Song

I love these two lines in Kind of Love Song:

And the last thing she said, it just destroyed me…
She said, "Babe, I'm sorry, but I have to save myself"

On the other hand, I don't get this line in the chorus, and haven't since the first time I heard it:

"That a better writer than I could pen"

Anyone else confused by it? I thought I may have been hearing wrong, but I wasn't.

No interest in being back at work today...I'm sure I'm the only American who feels that way! haha..

Sounds like he's dissin' himself. Quite ridiculously, of course.

Seems that insecurity had gotten the better of him.
