June 14 Ribfest Setlist

Unbelievable show. I think everyone was happy to see and hear Michael and the band in an outdoor setting. Some said "one of the best ever." Before I get on to the details of Michael and co., let me just say that the opening band, Strain Busy Sky -- they're awesome too. Great bunch of guys and Phil the lead singer is always a pleasure to listen to and watch. They commented on how it was easy to get to the gig as they all just live a few blocks away. But despite that, Phil was late anyway.

OK, on to Michael. He was joined by Klem on bass, Nick on drums, Pat on keyboards and Lance on bodhran for several selections. Michael also played harmonica in addition to guitar. And, despite my rule to refrain from commenting on attire, yup, he wore a hat. I think kind of like the one on the top of the Behind the Curtain Newsletter header.

Here's the set list, but note that I couldn't see during most of the show, someone else took this down and I'm sure it's accurate but corrections are welcome.

Sword of Damocles
Getting off the Dime (with harmonica intro)
Need Some Surrender
Shadow of the Capitol
Unemployed
Hellfire in the Holyland (w/Lance)
Wounded
Spark
When Doves Cry (cover w/Lance and I think the other guys must have left the stage, I'm not sure tho)
Arm Yourself (w/the Bob Dylan intro)
Freedom Highway (cover)
A Wall I Must Climb (I'm pretty sure w/harmonica and w/Lance)
Cal-Sag Road Song
Gonna Be Good
Junkie Girl
20 Miles South of Nowhere

Encore
Just West of Eden
Like a Rolling Stone (cover w/Pat on vocals + Michael)
I Can't Sleep Tonight

Also note that the set list, or at least one copy, was typed out beforehand.

Yeah! I had to get one post in on Paup Jr. before we get to go back to the home we were displaced from. The Derm Brass outta have a fire sale and unload a bunch of goodies on us for cheap before we all move back in. maybe a quality bootleg or two.
But, let's hear it for Mil for stepping up and giving us temporary housing. I was reading-just not posting, thanks to everyone who posted, it kept me off the porn sites temporarily.
And let's have some East coast shows Eric- is Eric still the Skipper? He refuses to respond to my alcohol fueled E mails. I fantasize that "they" are all hard at work with some "suits" at a big label and therefor too busy for my nonesense...Let me have that.
See ya back at the pad.

Yes, I think Mil does deserve many kudos for keeping interest alive in Pauper's Sky (aka. michael and his music) via "Pauper Jr." during these days that try the patience.

Much more to say on that subject, but uncharacteristically...I will keep my mouth shut!

Hope all is going well with michael and his forthcoming CD. I received the newsletter today and hope we have a new little gem in our hands sooner than later.

And lastly, what's with the question of michael's dwindling spiritual "themes" in his song? In my humble little opinion, spirituality exists in just about every song he writes. And while I don't have the newsletter handy to quote from, I think Michael "defended" himself more than eloquently and quite prophetically (sorry South...you might have to look that word up in the dictionary!!!)

more or less spiritual?

I do not think this person has heard "The Silent Will soon be Singing" for sure or a few more of Michael's newer songs. I think the word "spiritual" needs to be defined here with regard to the question. I wont get into it but I think once the new ALBUM comes out that fan will be able to make his/her own conclusion. Michael had made reference at the December Schubas show
about his last 4 records being written about someone. If he, at that time, was not "down in the dumps" and in fact happy and cheerful and had everything going for him and life was perfect...well those last 4 records would certainly not have been made. At least not the fabulous works of art that they are.Michael would not be "michael" Artists write from their soul and what happens to be going on their life at the moment usually comes out in their music that's no secret. I did think it was an interesting question though because many critics in the early days described Michael as a "christian rocker". In fact, I think the local paper in Madison/Middleton when advertising about the January show this year described Michael as a "Christain rocker" or maybe it was "former christian rocker"? I don't remember. At any rate, I too thought his reply was totally awesome.
Now, it's back to the "INSANE" asylum!
