There's an absolutely totally much better way to handle that situation if you are Torts

If it's me, and you don't want to lower yourself to NJ's gambit, you refuse to send in your line to the first drop, and ask the ref to come talk to you before you do.
When he comes over, I tell him, point blank, to look at the line the opposition is putting out. Tell him, you are faced with two options, and if you put out your original first line, you are endangering your skill guys, and ask the ref what he wants you to do. Tell him you are concerned about player safety and the opposing coach's stupidity.
The ref will likely understand more than anyone. If he offers no direction, put out your goons, and lodge a formal complaint that evening with Shanny. At least your on record as playing under protest.
This kind of staged malarky is asinine and pointless.
