Let's say the rumors are true and the Flyers are after Nash. And it costs us JVR and Schenn, who combined are on the hook for roughly $7.3 million per season. In addition, you are looking at a prospect or two and some picks to close it off. Does this deal make any sense? As far as prospects outside of the NHL, there aren't any that I would really miss. Manning and Gustafsson looked alright in some brief NHL time, but losing one of the two wouldn't really be huge since you'll still have the other.
Salaray cap wise, I know it is a lot of money to put into one player, but we are going to be paying JVR $4.25 million a season based on potential and 1 good, albeit short playoff performance. Schenn as well is quite highly paid considering his body of NHL work. Can anyone explain to me why his salary is so high for what capgeek is listing as an entry level contract? And he is also another guy are paying for potential. Both players have had injury issues in their short careers. While I like both and would like to see what they develop into, would could be sitting on two guys who will be good 2nd/3rd liners.
Nash has done well on a bad, bad team but hasn't performed to the level that he is being paid. Is it a lack of support? It certainly isn't the amount of ice time he gets. Is it getting frustrated with the losing? He is a very, very talented player and goal scorer. Does he play with Giroux? You're putting a 2 similar power forward types if you keep Hartnell there. Do you put him with Briere?
So let's say JVR, Schenn, Manning, and a 2nd for Nash. It frees up salary cap space to the point where the defense could probably still be addressed and it gives you a definite first line talent for a player who might become a 1st liner and a player who's ceiling looks to be Mike Richards. I don't know how I would feel about this if it were to go through. It's a lot of money, and I would feel it was a fair deal if we didn't have Briere clogging up so much cap space.
All that being said, I would much rather we pursue Bobby Ryan.
