Contracts, as of right now at least, are averaged out; that's why you are seeing the 10 year plus deals getting a couple years at the tail end for $1 million. I believe I read that the owners don't want averages anymore, instead they want the actual payout each year to be the actual cap hit. I can see an argument for both sides, and if a team is smart they could really juke the system. Imagine if we could pay Giroux about $15 million this season and drop his cap hit by about $2 million a year for the next five years.
