Flyers get killed and NYR keeps choking

by Outland

The NJD kicked our asses tonight and the excuse loaded wails about flu, not having Forsberg, Primeau, St.Christopher and/or Little Orphan f--kin' Annie will again fill the night air. Will anybody be questioning why his team can't come to an arena prepared to play? Maybe KH will explain why he felt a need to take Richards away from Knuble and Gagne and go instead to our 'other' Mr. Groin, Petr Nedved or why the Carter line still gets 11-12 minutes a night on a team sorely lacking in firepower.

Right now, this team is not deserving of a division title nor are the choking for all it's worth Rangers who lost their 3rd straight game tonight, this time to the lowly Pens. The Devil win moves them ahead of us into the #5 seed position. We're still 3 points behind the Rangers (as are the Devils) with a game in hand. The Devils and NYR have 2 games left on their schedule and we have 3. If the playoffs started tomorrow, the NYR and the Flyers would be 1st round opponents. It would probably be the best possible matchup for both teams and we could have a contest to see who could show up the most unprepared to play or choke the hardest.

Montreal beat the Brooooooons 4-3 and is a whisker away from claiming a playoff spot. They would have got that tonight except for Atlanta beating the Caps 5-3 and that W moved the Thrashers to 2 points behind Tampa Bay with each team having 3 to play. Toronto beat the NYI 4-3 to keep their hopes alive but they'll have to overtake 2 teams to get to the playoffs & are 1 point behind Atl. and 3 behind the Bolts.

" Maybe KH will explain why he felt a need to take Richards away from Knuble and Gagne and go instead to our 'other' Mr. Groin, Petr Nedved or why the Carter line still gets 11-12 minutes a night on a team sorely lacking in firepower."

I just finished watching the recording...thankfully triple scanned for the second half...

Milksop was at his soppiest tonight, with pansy spin moves and drop passes to nowhere. Absolutley no jam, and no surprise to see he and Rathje, Clarke's Mistakes of 2006, combine on the disgraceful 4th NJ goal. I await to see if the torn labrum of Butthat is really a difference between worthy and damn near useless.

Another night ot be sick to death of the vets on this team.

Another example how I only really feel like I am watching Flyers when Carter's line is out. For all the pans at the deadline, Dimitrakos and Gauthier are a breath of fresh air on this sad sack unit. To think I was among those wondering what use RJ was a month or two back.

But, before I go too far, I'll give passes to Richards and Handzus for being stuck with duds. Mike, you blew it on Brylin though. Did nobody fill you in that he scores 85% of his goals on Philly?

I feel a bit bad for Gagne and Knuble, stuck with Milksop's pathetic ****fest of limpwristed pansy plays, but I'd like to see them force more action all the same.

Disgrace.

MESSAGE TO COACHES: WE ALL CLEARLY SEE THAT CARTER, UMBERGER, AND DIMITRAKOS GET MORE DONE THESE PAST WEEKS THAN EVEN GAGNE/KNUBLE/FORSBERG. YOU HAVE GIVEN THEM PP TIME, BUT WHY OH WHY DON'T THEY PLAY EVERY SECOND SHIFT WHEN THE TEAM PLAYS LIKE ****???????????????????????????????????

NO MORE MILKSOP! RICHARDS WITH GAGNE WHEN FORSBERG IS OUT! BELIEVE US, WE'LL LIVE WITH THE MISTAKES, AND AT LEAST SEE SOME RESULTS!

THE FUTURE IS NOOOOOOOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!!!! ROOKS ARE IT! MANY VETS PLAINLY SUCK!

I can't handle weak efforts.

it is unbelievable

by Pelle31

why you'd take Richards off that line and put nedved out there......I also agree he sticks with vets way too much......that only works when the vets set the example and play hard...ours are mailing it in for some reason and yet they get most of the icetime......

we'll be lucky to win any playoff series at this point.....

they are better off releasing these useless players they have and playing all the younger kids......I'd rather much watch that than the crap we have now...at least we may have a team that is more hungry every night, a team that I could stomach making a mistake now and then, a team that I can look forward seeing next year....right now I don't look forward to next year (that isn't even here yet) because I see the same cast of characters......

we are also stuck with a coach that we all agree thought would turn this team around but it turns out he has no clue how to manage young players and puts too much stock in his vets....how mnay years left for Capt Kangaroo?

100% agree with the assessment of Zak, Burger, and Nico the Greek

by Omaha Flyer

Carter, Dimitrakos, and Umberger... they're the only line that I've seen the past few weeks that hustles every shift and is creating any sort of excitement... and that includes when Forsberg was in the lineup.

The kids are working well... give 'em more ice time.

Needed to bring their best game

by Marty Mason

Instead they brought their worst. Esche with at least 2 very stoppable goals, no one seemed to want to do dirty work and Hitchcock either cannot adjust or they won't listen to him if he does give adjustments.

One and done is looking more and more like the result of their first round no matter who they play.

Flyers History update

by flyershistory

A fairly big one this time ...

I've entered in around 80% of the call-ups/demotions in team history. They are added to the transactions pages, season summary and individual player's pages.

As well to the player's page I've added injury info (while the player was a Flyer), so now you get a list of (almost) all the call-ups, demotions and injuries a player has had while he was a Flyer.

I'm missing the last couple of weeks of transactions (which I'll catch up on next week) and I'll also be adding when the players sign/resigned contracts (at least those that I have info for) within a couple of weeks as well.

he might not wish to end his career with a season like this. I hope that he doesn't try to stick around and just signs off on what was a pretty good career. Injuries aside, it appears that your assessment that he was a shell of what he once was for too much of the year is accurate.

Pitkanen and Carter

by Sedsey

First to Joni, and I have been noticing that more often than not since he returned, he is blowing coverage in our crease. Once I started thinking that last night, after he did it on the first goal, I saw him do it on every goal. The last one by Crosby, Leclair and one other are out front, so I forgive, but even though his offensive game seems back in form, this will have to pick up a lot.

Carters game winner starts by him taking that same old "low %" shot off our left circle...MellonPitts never recovers, and Dimitrakos makes a nice touch over to Jeff for yet another goal. He's right where we want him.

Playoff Predictions

by CT-Flyer

It's easy to be down on this team, no doubt. However, like it or not, the Flyers are playoff bound. So, who's willing to put their reputation on the line and predict how far the Flyers will go in the playoffs? In which round will the Flyers be eliminated? Anyone care to post their predictions?

Of course, since there's no money or other rewards for being right (or penalties for being wrong), who cares? Let's just do it for pride.

Bonus points if you predict the team who knocks the Flyers "out" of the playoffs and in how many games.

Takers?

Fair Enough

by CT-Flyer

Let's wait until the match-ups. However, I'm just tired of the many who seem to have umped on the "Flyers Suck" bandwagon of late. Several not giving them a chance to clear Round 1 (without knowing who the opponent is). I'm not saying this team's performance is glowing--there are definitely problems.

Ahhhh, bunk. It's so damned easy to be a nay-sayer (not directed at you Outy), because whenever the Flyers get bumped, the nay-sayers will be right. If they do anything but win the Cup, the season will be a disaster. If they make it to the third round and lose, they suck. Easy way out, I suppose.

CT, no newsflash that I think the team is ripe for plundering by just about anybody they face in round 1 unless they magically improve the PK, porous defense and wildly erratic play. I will not state I told you so when they are eliminated. If they get past the 1st round, I will consider it a major accomplishment considering the many play and injury issues that have plagued them all year. I know that they won't win this year, I will be happy with getting to the second round. In addition, it really is a bit or a miracle that they are 43-24-12 considering that their GF/GA differential are so very close and their play has been so all over the board this year.

No Forsberg for the rest of the regular season?

by CT-Flyer

Anyone think the "miracle cure" of his groin had more to do with emotion and adrenaline than the "crack" Swedish medical staff?

-------------------------------------

Forsberg's Status Uncertain Down the Stretch

Apr 12, 3:11 PM (ET)

By ROB MAADDI
VOORHEES, N.J. (AP) - Peter Forsberg wants to be healthy for the playoffs, even if it means the Philadelphia Flyers have to start on the road.

Needing to win their final four games to clinch the Atlantic Division title and secure the No. 3 seed in the Eastern Conference, the Flyers might have to do it without Forsberg, their star center who has missed the last three games with a groin injury.

Forsberg participated in an optional skate at the team's practice facility on Wednesday and said his status for Thursday night's game at New Jersey will be a game-time decision.

The Devils, sixth in the East, trail Philadelphia by two points. The Flyers are three points behind the division-leading Rangers, who have three games left. The teams meet in Philadelphia on Saturday.

"It's more important to be healthy for the playoffs than one or two games," Forsberg said. "I want to come back healthy. I want to make sure I'm 100 percent."

If the Flyers stayed in fifth place, they'd likely meet the Buffalo Sabres in the first round. If they won the division, they'd probably end up playing the Devils. Finishing sixth would give them a matchup against the Rangers.

Considering all options, the Flyers might be better off losing a few games and playing New York, which is making its first postseason appearance since 1997. The streaking Devils have won eight straight games and are 28-8-5 at home against the Flyers since 1990. The Sabres won three of the four games against Philadelphia this season.

While the Flyers certainly want the home-ice advantage that goes to the top four teams, they have played better on the road this season. Philadelphia is 21-13-6 at the Wachovia Center, 22-11-5 on the road.

With Forsberg, the former NHL MVP in the lineup, the Flyers are 33-16-9. Without him, they're 10-8-2. Forsberg has 19 goals and 55 assists for 74 points in 58 games. He's gone out four separate times with groin injuries.

"If you look at the standings, you're going to get a good opponent," Forsberg said. "If we win the division, we get Jersey. We're not going to get an easy opponent."

Forsberg missed the eight games before the Olympic break with a groin injury. But he played in the Turin Games, helping Sweden win its first gold medal since 1994. He has four goals and eight assists in 16 games since returning from the Olympics.

"We're not going to put him in unless he's 100 percent," coach Ken Hitchcock said. "If he's 100 percent after today, we'll probably let him go at it. But if he's not, then we will wait until Saturday."

Forsberg signed a two-year, $11.5 million contract with Philadelphia after leading Colorado to two Stanley Cup championships during his nine years with the Avalanche.

The Flyers have been decimated by injuries this season, losing six players - former captain Keith Primeau, forward Sami Kapanen and defensemen Eric Desjardins, Joni Pitkanen, Kim Johnsson and Chris Therien - for more than 20 games. Primeau (concussion), Johnsson (concussion symptoms) and Therien (head) remain out.

"We've had to overcome adversity the whole season," Hitchcock said.

Goaltender Robert Esche will make his fifth start in six games against the Devils. Hitchcock hasn't named his playoff starter, but it appears he's leaning toward Esche over Antero Niittymaki. Esche is 21-9-5 with a 2.94 goals-against average and .897 save percentage. Niittymaki is 22-15-6 with a 3.01 goals-against average and .894 save percentage.

With a few teams interested in Flyers scout Dean Lombardi as a possible G.M.do the Flyers look for some sort of compensation? Can they weasel out a first round draft pick like they did with Freddy?
I'm hoping yes...that would be sweet. It looks like there are at least two teams interested,so we should get some sort of compensation,if he does go to any team.
A first round pick from this draft would be great,as me and my kid will be attending the draft in Vancouver.

Big night for the Flyers - Isles beat Rangers 3-2

by Outland

The NYR loss coupled with our win makes it 3 pts. behind with 1 game in hand. NYR had a lead where they could afford to lose 2 games. Well, now they've done that with back to back losses to the NJD and the Isles. Can they say choke? Does Kasparaitis#6, Grier#25, Jagr68 gargle with goat piss?

Atlanta closed in on Tampa bay with a 6-2 win against the Bolts tonight. Leaves them 4 behind with a game in hand for the last spot.

NJD beat the Canes in OT and that win clinched a playoff berth for the Goats. They're hot on our trail for 5th and, unbelievably, still in the hunt for the division. The Canes single point still has them on top of the East pending how Ottawa does in OT against Boston. An Ottawa win would put them back on top.

Things are Getting Interesting

by CT-Flyer

Flyers schedule really gives them a lot of control:

at NJD
Rangers
at NJD
at Islanders

And now, suddenly, what appeared to be a couple of somewhat meaningless games at the end of the season, mean something. For example, the last game of the season OTT at NYR. Both teams might need this win to secure playoff position/home ice. A couple of weeks ago, this game looked almost meaningless to OTT. The same day you have BUF at CAR and also NJD at MON. All of these could have an impact and standings, home ice, etc.

And, between now and then, the Rangers face PIT (a team that wants to leave a message for next season), and the Flyers.

The Flyers basically need to win 3 out of 4 and have the Rangers lose 2 out of 3 and they absolutely must beat the Rangers (not in OT either).

I predict the Flyers take 1 game from the Devils and beat the Rangers and Islanders. Also, the Rangers will beat the Pens and lose to the Flyers and Ottawa.

This is getting fun....

Preds Vokoun done for the year

by Outland

Nashville, Tenn. – Nashville Predators Executive Vice President/General Manager David Poile announced today that Predators goaltender Tomas Vokoun has been diagnosed with a blood condition called pelvic thrombophlebitis and is undergoing treatment at Baptist Hospital under the supervision of Predators head team physician Dr. Michael Pagnani, M.D. and team internist Dr. Richard Garman, M.D. While a full recovery is expected, Vokoun will miss the remainder of the 2005-06 regular season and post-season.

“Since being diagnosed with this condition, Tomas has been hospitalized and is receiving medication and undergoing additional tests,” said Poile. “His treatment, which includes blood-thinning medication, will prohibit him from playing hockey through the remainder of this season. He will continue to be monitored by Dr. Pagnani and Dr. Garman and we are hopeful that he will be discharged from Baptist Hospital in the next few days.”

“Tomas had pain in his lower back after our game against St. Louis on April 1,” explained Pagnani. “After initial MRI tests of his back showed nothing to explain his back pain, further studies were performed that revealed blood clots located in veins in his lower abdomen. Tomas did not sustain an injury to this area, and the tests have not revealed any definite cause for the blood clots.”

“The treatment for this uncommon medical condition is blood-thinning medication, and he will require this treatment for a number of weeks,” added Dr. Garman. “In time, we expect a full recovery.”

Vokoun, 29 (7/2/76), has posted a record of 36-18-7 with a 2.67 goals-against average and .919 save percentage in 61 games for the Predators this season. The franchise’s all-time winningest goaltender ranks among NHL leaders in wins and save percentage. He has been named the NHL’s Defensive Player of the Week twice this season, and the Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic native helped lead his country to a bronze medal at the 2006 Winter Olympic Games in Turin, Italy.

“Tomas is an extremely important and valuable part of our team, and his presence will be missed,” said Poile. “Our thoughts and support are with him as he begins the recovery process, and we are confident that he will have a complete recovery. We know what kind of a person and what kind of a competitor he is; that being said, he will do everything in his power to get back on the ice, and we look forward to seeing him in training camp this fall.”

This is a major blow to the Predators. I was really hoping Vokun and the Preds would make some noise in the playoffs.

Arrrgggghhh!!!!

by Lone Star Flyer

I've more eloquently lamented this in other places, so I'll stick to my "argh" and just relate it to things Flyers.

---

The silver lining in all of this news for the Preds, should there be one, is that everyone's now writing them off as yesterday's news. The bar has really been lowered. Which means that Chris Mason (the Predators starting goalie these days, in case you were asking "Who??") should have less pressure on him than whoever Hitch elects to have start for the Flyers.

So, if the Preds get bounced in the first round, it's because Vokoun wasn't available.

But, if the Flyers get bounced, it'll be no small fault of the goalie (valid complaint or not.) Assists to Hitch for starting that goalie, and Clarkie for acquiring Dimitrakos at the deadline.

I knew who he was :-)

by Omaha Flyer

Watched him beat the Blues last night.

Unfortunately, if the Preds are bounced early, Vokoun will be the excuse, though I don't think that will happen... I'm banking on the team rallying around Mason, playing on the "we don't need Tomas to win" attitude.

Out of curiousity... is there a good Predators site out there. I know nothing can possibly compare with this place (yes... huzzahs again to Pete), but if there's something close, I'd like to visit as I watch a lot of Predators hockey.

Thanks!

There's not really a Predators equivalent of this site (at least not that I've found) where you've got all the organization's history so readily available. There are some message board forums, by far the most widely visited is the Invision board at http://68.252.159.75/forums/

Primeau Article

by CT-Flyer

This article makes it sound like he might be considering the playoffs.

-----------------------------------
Primeau, Thought to Be Out for Season, Practices With Flyers

Apr 10, 4:15 PM (ET)

VOORHEES, N.J. (AP) - Philadelphia Flyers captain Keith Primeau, who said five weeks ago he would miss the rest of the season, practiced with the team Monday but downplayed speculation he might return for the playoffs. Primeau, sidelined since Oct. 30 with post-concussion symptoms, took part in a number of contact drills and didn't wear anything designating him as being injured.

In a press conference Feb. 28, the 34-year-old Primeau insisted that he wouldn't return to the NHL until September at the earliest. But he has been feeling better in recent weeks and decided to test his progress.

"I felt good," Primeau said. "My conditioning, my legs feel about as good as they can for the amount of time I've been off. It felt really good to be part of the practice, enjoy my teammates differently than I have for the last five months."

Primeau was injured in a game at Montreal on Oct. 25 when he was struck in the head by Canadiens rookie Alexander Perezhogin. He played one more game before taking himself out of the lineup.

Afterward, he experienced problems with balance and vision. Some of those symptoms have subsided, he said.

"This is part of my rehab," Primeau said. "It's another hurdle and it's a huge hurdle for me. But by no means does it change anything I've stated earlier. I just keep trying to take it one day at a time and progress. I wasn't any the worse for wear from the little bit of contact I had, which is good."

Asked whether he has enough time to get ready for the playoffs, which start April 21, Primeau said he wasn't sure.

"That's a long way off," he said. "It's a hypothetical. My head will have to feel a lot better. It still felt about a foot behind. I'm not going back on the comments I made when this started and the comments I made in my press conference. At this time, there's no way I can make that assumption."

Derian Hatcher, filling in as captain in Primeau's absence, said the whole team got a lift from the experience.

"Any time you have a guy coming back, they bring energy with them," Hatcher said. "It's good to see."

General manager Bob Clarke said the decision to return is Primeau's.

"Until the doctors tell us he can play, I'm not even going to worry about it," Clarke said. "We've been under the assumption he's not going to play. I think it's been impressive what he's accomplished to get back this far. It's really up to the doctors and Keith. The Flyers can use him, but it's his decision."

Is the GM's hamster running faster these days?

by Outland

Instead of Clarke nipping this in the bud, he's actually considering this?

"Until the doctors tell us he can play, I'm not even going to worry about it," Clarke said. "We've been under the assumption he's not going to play. I think it's been impressive what he's accomplished to get back this far. It's really up to the doctors and Keith. The Flyers can use him, but it's his decision."

The doctors? Oh my god. His decision? Letting a guy who didn't have any common sense to start with decide what he should do is ludicrous. I hope KP's family is smarter than he is and not allow him to do something incredibly stupid.

"The Flyers can USE him....." - The emphasis is on use and that says it all. A GM who thought highly of a player as a perfromer and a friend wouldn't even be considering this.

You act so incredulous & surprised. Why? When a player gets thrown out of a game and assessed a major for intent to injure, what did you expect? Whether it was a good call or not the league NEVER changes it's mind especially when it's a guy who's a repeat ofender.

I saw Lindros get a major in New York and he NEVER EVER touched the guy. The other player slipped and Lindros went right over him and replays proved it. It didn't matter then and it won't matter now.

by Icer

like Outs said, history and all - but c'mon - hellwig skates froom 20 feet to board a guy who doesn't even have the puck, and gets one, Gauthier gets two for an accidental hit that he apologized for and even took himself out of the play to make sure he was OK? I thought the suspension was supposed to be based on intent?

Then of course, there's the Tucker incident, if you want to add history to the equation......

Hollweg got 3 games for the Umberger hit

by Outland

Gauthier's hit an accident? Maybe the Leaf getting hurt was that but the hit itself wasn't. He meant to nail the guy as hard as he could and in Gauthier fashion but he gave little thought to where he was when doing it. Just make the hit. I know that he apologized and said he didn't mean it but isn't that also what little children do when they know they did something wrong and got caught?

I believe you're right that a suspension is based on intent. A 5 minute major for boarding says it is an intent to injure. 4 minutes would have said it was just to vigorous. The game misconduct part is what threw me. One would think he should have been given a match penalty instead.

Buffalo has a weakness in net

by youngflyerzfan

Originally i thought that we must avoid Buffalo at all costs, but now (after we beat them without Forsberg) I have spotted the weakness. It's the young, inexperienced goaltender who I predict, will fold down the stretch.

Since we have made the playoffs, I don't see anyone that the Flyers can't get by in the east, including Ottawa, Carolina, and Buffalo.

Your optimism is great and hope you are right, but don't ignore the statistical facts that are hard to refute. The Flyers have a far below average PK and the PP isn't good either. Their defense and goals against is the worst this team has seen since the early 90's (before you were born? What wins in the playoffs? Special teams play and defense. It's gonna be a rough ride no matter who they play.

ALthough 1990 was the year i was born, i still know what has proven to be the reason for victories in the OLD NHL's playoffs. This year whoever has the combination of a potent scoring attack (at even strength) and good goaltending will win. And if you LOOK AT THE STATS this year we would be on the road against BUffalo, where our PK is much better than at home. And as long as we have Peter our PP will be fine

Devils beat Rangers 3-2

by Outland

NYR had a 2-1 lead after 2 but couldn't close the deal. The NYR lead remains at 5 and we have a game in hand. The NJD moved within 2 points of us for the #5 seed position and we have a game in hand on them as well.

Tampa Bay lost to Fla. 6-3 and the door to the playoffs is still cracked open for Atlanta and Toronto.

Brodeur is still a difference maker. Would MUCH rather see the Devs D playing tentative in those games we have coming up against them.

I think our playoff positioning is going to depend more on how we play the Devs than what happens with NYR. The Rangers have been flagging for a while, from what i've seen. They are still catchable, but we have to own the Devs to make it happen.

Buffalo?

by youngflyerzfan

An early round with the Rangers would be strenuous and would most likely put us on the road against the Canes in round two. I would like the Sabres most, since if we won and all the upper seeds won, that would put us in round two against ottawa.

I feel Ottawa can't beat us ever since March 4, 2004 (a game i attended) when the Flyers beat the crap out of the Sens with 419 total penalty minutes between both teams.

I still don't really know what the best opposition would be, but i would like to avoid a strenuous first round.

Avoiding a strenuous 1st round

by Outland

The only solution to that is to NOT make the playoffs and that's too late. There are not going to be any easy series like in the past. Often, the teams at #7 and #8 were just scraping by to get in and fodder for the top team. Not this year. Any of the lower seeded teams are going to be tough for the 'bigs' and vice versa.

When I think of the Sens, I look at the health status of Hasek, Chara, Phillips and Redden and not some game from 2004.

Don't you remember the mental flyers of the past?

by youngflyerzfan

In the past the Flyers have had the same issue with the Devils that the Senators have with us now. I don't care if a team is 82-0 in the regular season, if they have a team they can't get by mentally, they will never get by them physically. The Flyers have always, mentally, had a problem with the devils. Even when they were up 3-1 in the Conference Finals a few years ago and lost. The issue now is that we are in Ottawa's heads. I am convinced that if we faced them we would take it in 5, 6 max, and easily advance. When you look at teams current situation for evaluation you have to look at the past as well whether it be 2 years or two weeks ago. CMON Outland you know that this is true, just look at their record against us since. (All this year: our only loss was without Forsberg) "Some game from 2004" was the turning point in this new rivalry.

Since the brawl in March 2004 we have played the Senators 5 times and are 3-2. Is that owning them or domination? I'd have to think that if you were in someone's head that they wouldn't hang an L on you the very next game you played but that's what happened.

Some of the combatants remain but many have moved on. 11 of the Flyers who played & fought that night are now gone. I'm sure the Senator roster is far from the same as well.

Yep :-)

by Outland

I'm not a fair weather fan RF. Nobody on the PK defense was real sharp last night but I'm more concerned about undisciplined (dumb works too) players giving away 8 PP attempts to a team that thrives on it & for getting their asses kicked in the face off circles. Anyway, when KH resorts to using Carter on a PK unit you know he's searching for answers. Odd that he dressed Turner Stevenson last night and didn't use him on PK duty at all.

Even though Hatcher was on the ice for 3 of the PP goals, he wasn't to blame for all 3. He accepted the blame for not doing a better job with O'Neal on the deflected 1st goal and I'd think in the old days he probably would have tied him up but in today's game it's interference/holding with no tolerance for the crease and slot wars. Other than that, he wasn't directly to blame for anything else. For what it's worth, Rathje, Pitkanen, Radivojevic,Meyer and Zus were on for 2 Leaf PP goals and I know that Rathje is a victim here because one PP goal was PP/EN and the other goal saw Mike Richards fail to clear a puck (Tucker stopped his shot) and that led directly to the 3rd score at the very end of the Gauthier major. Gauthier getting thrown out early in the 2nd didn't help matters.

Just being on the ice when a PP goal is scored against us doesn't mean those guys were failures. Good plays are made by the opponent, point shots get deflected & change trajectory from the high slot, wierd bounces off boards and skates happen and goalies can't see a shot or the puck. As you can see, I am a forgiving and benevolent poster. Especially if it suits my needs.

It was ugly

by Outland

Why they keep insisting on taking foolish penalties is bad enough. What's maddening is they look like they've successfully made a kill and then we see our goal lamp on. 3 goals got scored with :18, :07 and :31 seconds (the 5 min.major kill) left to go.

I agree that this new game does not suit Rathje and Hatcher real well and I'm not sure it will suit Gauthier either but as bad as they looked last night, they looked real good in Buffalo. Is it the grind of the schedule or the way they get used? I don't know the answer but I'd have to think that Hatcher could be a tad tired. He logs tons of ice time per game and is the go too guy for KH.

In respect to the captain question, I find it hard for any defenseman who is a team captain to have the same impact on the ice as a forward who can range so much more. Off the ice the playing field is equal and apparently KH likes what he had in Dallas and now in Philly. The division is all but officially gone now and we better get it together or we'll have the teams under us dropping us further down the seeding chart.

Thomas the flopping fish - imitation of Flyer death throe?

by Outland

Nylander looked so much at ease, not to mention alone, wristing in that winner. It ws like the Broooons didn't feel like playing any longer.

We're in big trouble. 5 out with 5 to play means that the NYR can lose 2 games in regulation with no problem. That's a helluva cushion to have.

NJ has defeated the Habs and is now at #6 and is only 4 points behind the enigmas and we all know we have 2 games left with that crew. Tampa moves up a notch to #7 with a 1-0 win against Pittsburgh. Montreal drops to #8 for the time being and is still 6 pts up on Atl. and 7 on the Leafs.

Buffalo is beating Ottawa but Carolina blows a chance to take over the #1 seed with a loss to Atlanta.

Oskar Bartulis...flyers pick

by Downie16

but I was more impressed by the play of some of Moncton’s lesser stars. Adam Pineault (CLB) used his size and skill very nicely and buried some nice goals, while blueliner Oskars Bartulis (PHI) showed why the Wildcats need him healthy and in the lineup. He was a force at both ends of the ice and showed improved poise and focus.

Bring back The Whale?

Report: Pens could move under developer's plan
Associated Press

PITTSBURGH -- A Massachusetts developer wants to buy the Pittsburgh Penguins and either keep the hockey team in the city or move them to Hartford, Conn., where he is trying to get state officials to build a new arena, a newspaper reported Friday.

Lawrence Gottesdiener told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review that he owns a great deal of property in Hartford, so moving the team there makes sense for him.

"I see a really exciting future for that team," Gottesdiener told the newspaper. "If it can't be worked out in Pittsburgh ... we have a really huge real estate portfolio in Hartford."

"As a policy, we're not going to comment and we're not going to confirm or deny any of these inquiries," Penguins spokesman Tom McMillan said Friday.

Gottesdiener also didn't immediately return a call to his office from The Associated Press.

Late last year, Gottesdiener told Connecticut officials that he had a plan to bring an NHL team to the city if they would help him build a new 16,000-seat arena in Hartford, where his company, Northland Investment Corp., of Newton, Mass., owns about $500 million worth of real estate.

The Penguins' lease on 45-year-old Mellon Arena, the oldest and smallest in the NHL, expires at the end of next season. Penguins owner Mario Lemieux is trying to sell the team and he has said a new owner would likely move out of Pittsburgh without a new arena.

There are two proposals to build a new arena for the team in Pittsburgh.

Both proposals are tied to gambling. Three companies are now seeking the right to open a slot machine parlor in Pittsburgh. Only one will win a license from the state to do so.

One of the companies, Isle of Capri Casinos, has agreed to pay the entire cost for a new one if it is awarded the license.

City, county and state officials have countered with a backup plan that would require the Penguins to pay $8.5 million up front and make annual lease payments of $2.9 million. That plan calls for contributions from whichever gambling company wins the slots parlor license.

Penguins representatives on Thursday discussed the backup plan with city and county officials.

A Penguins consultant, David Morehouse, told the newspaper after that meeting that the team didn't learn enough about the proposal to decide whether to accept the alternative arena plan.

"There are still a number of questions that have to be answered before we can determine if it's viable," Morehouse said.

Among other things, he said it's not clear if Gov. Ed Rendell could legally use slot machine proceeds to help fund the arena or whether another casino company would agree to contribute.

Hartford lost its NHL franchise when the Whalers moved to North Carolina and were renamed the Carolina Hurricanes.

Gottesdiener called the Penguins "an excellent entry point to get into the NHL. We've said that we're in this to buy an NHL team."

If a move to Hartford would play out, do they keep the Penguins name or would we see a return of the Whalers?

Interesting...

by CT-Flyer

But I doubt it will ever happen. Ironically, there's been no mention of this in the CT news (or at least the bits I read/watch). I heard it yesterday on the news in the Charlotte airport on my way home. You'd think the state would want to get some pro sports back in the. There was a feeble attempt to get the Patriots to move here a few years ago. Oh, I almost forgot...there is a WNBA team that plays at Mohegan Sun. What are they called???...the Connecticut something or others.

I'd certainly love to see NHL hockey back in the state. Though Hartford's a good 50 minute drive for me (without traffic). I have to imagine the minor league teams wouldn't be too happy about this. Hartford Wolf Pack attendance would probably drop drastically, so expect some push-back from whoever owns them (is it the Rangers??). Not to mention, historically, support for hockey has been lacking in the state. When Carolina can out-draw a "northern, cold-weather" state in attendance, something's wrong.

Anyway, IF, IF, IF, it were to happen, I can't imagine they'd use the old Whalers name. They'd probably come up with something new and catchy.

the Pens aren't going anywhere

by Pelle31

don't believe a word of this......there are 2 plans to keep them here....one is the Pens got one of the bidders for the slot license to give them $290 million UP FRONT to build a new arena........no state tax money used....period...

then our mafia style govenor comes in with his backup plan to fund a new arena if that casino company doesn't win the contract.....they want the Pens to kick in some money along with the winner of the slots deal......this is BS in many ways...first off the state told the Pens that there is no state money to build them a new arena even tho every other new building that has been built in the state the last 10 years has gotten state funding.......they were told to find a partner if they wanted a new arena....so they did...

secondly Fast Eddy can't afford the Pens moving because he's up for re-election this year so all of a sudden he comes up with his plan.....he's spent TONS more money out east and the people of western Pa are pretty ticked at Ed out here at least......

to me it's a no brainer that you award the contract to the company that will build you basically a $290 million GIFT for allowing them to have the license.....their plan of development in Pitt is just as good as the other 2 bidders......rumor has it that old Ed and his mafia commission (slots board) have already picked their choice(the ones who've given him big $$$$ donations) and it isn't the one where Pitt gets the free arena....it's also convenient that they put off the announcement of who wins the contract until AFTER the elected.......

IMO they won't leave...they have a lease thru 2007 and i'm sure if they are going to get a new arena it can be extended a year......Mario said all along that they will stay as long as they get the arena so either way it will get done

Big East games on tap today

by Outland

NYR at Boston - NYR has a 3 pt. division lead which means the #3 seed. Highly unlikely the Flyers or NYR will be anything better than that. Each can still be #5-#8 seed.

NJD at Montreal - Winner is #6 seed. Regulation time loser could be #8 if TB gets a W. OT/SO loser will be #7

Leafs at Flyers - Leafs playoff hopes on life support. Needs lots of help and should be desparate.

Buffalo at Ottawa - Sabres can still win division but would need help too.

Canes at Atlanta - Canes still in hunt for #1 seed. Atl. playoff hopes on life support. Need help.

Pens at Tampa Bay - TB win could move them up to #7 seed. A regulation time loss coupled with an Atl.win shrinks their lead to 4 pts over Atl. for #8

No Peter & Petr last night and they looked solid for 60 minutes. I agree that when they come to play they're a handful for any team in the league but it's not often enough, and like you say, maddening and frustrating to see the same players look so poor at times. I've called them consistently inconsistent and just when it looks like a corner has been turned we get performances we wince at. The playoffs ought to be a hoot because we have no idea what team plays night after night.

I'm a bit torn on what to think about last night. It's not about how we played but how Buffalo has been playing for the last month or so. To say we beat a team in a death spin denigrates the effort of our guys but to just ignore the state of Buffalo hockey these days is also incorrect. Sabres beat the Sens the other night and I guess that has to account for something.

Not bad.

by Sedsey

I missed the first half, so no idea of Umberger's goal, or Gagne's. I also miss Desjardins on the PP, entering at 3-1.

From there, I go on to watch a "boring" (according to Sabres C man Jim Lorentz, who would later give the team credit for fine execution) Flyers team play with the effort again, and the first victory over Buffalo, who admittedly continue to slump, but were helped to stay that way from what I saw.

Fun to watch Gauthier work again. Nice hit on Briere.

Potulny 7 minutes? I'm insane. How about 6:23 in the debut, skating with Brashear and Savage at times I noticed. To be fair, it is 3-2 most of the way down, and as soon as Knuble scores off those nice plays from Pitkanen and Gagne, he gets him out for another shift. I didn't see enough to say anything else.

Lorentz says we look like the Devils.

Keep the effort going!

(speaking of superstition, does this now mean I have to miss the first half of every game?)

I liked Richards on the top line

by Pelle31

nice to see him get some work other than with grunts on his line.....he didn't look out of place with Gagne/Knuble......

they do look alot like the Devils when they get the lead BUT whenever you force a team like Buffalo to dump the puck in it's very effective.......take their speed away and more times than not you'll beat them......

that Afinogenov kid for the Buffs is really fun to watch and makes things happen.....even with our suffocating D last night he created chances for them with his speed and puck handling...one of those guys like Forsberg where the puck always seems to come to him

consistancy is still what we need.....good one night horrid the next....we'll see if we can avenge the last loss to the Leafs today

They were dragonslayers. Solid from the opening faceoff to the final horn. They did NOT play their usual game ( ) but positioned themselves well at all times, made some effective hits and backchecked like a team on a mission. There were some minor glitches but for the most part we played very well.

3 "out" with 6 to play sure beats being 4 or 5 out with 6 to play.

Out of context worries, and Enter Potulny?

by Sedsey

http://www.philadelphiaflyers.com/pressbox/archive/2539.asp

“They have a lot of skill offensively,” said Simon Gagne. “We don’t want to try and beat them by scoring more goals. We need to play our game."

--We're in trouble in that case.

Hitchcock did not rule out the possibility of playing newly signed Ryan Potulny in Friday’s game.

“Potulny is a real possibility,” he said. “Every day he’s with us, we’re more and more impressed. There is an upside to this. We can get a real good look at him in a pretty intense hockey game.”

--Yes, Ryan, you too could experience 7 minutes with Brashear.

With these trends emerging, can a win be far away? Wouldn't it be great if Potulny registered as an instant offensive threat?

He'll score twice, miss one backcheck, and then we'll see him next season. heh heh

As a rabid supporter, I expect character effort from the team. If it is there and we lose, then I can "accept" it much better, and I would think most of you are the same. Results weren't always there the last game, but the effort was, and I as I said afterwards, if it stays at the level, we'll be in contention.

Teams makes mistakes. No goals would ever be scored without them. I have some nitpicks about the Rangers game, but again, overall I had little qualm with the "try".

In the don't look now dept.

by Outland

The NJD who beat the Pens 6-4 last night are only 4 points behind us right now. We have a game in hand on them but they've made inroads on that double digit lead we recently had on them. Montreal plays Ottawa tonight and a win by the Habs would also move them to 4 points behind us.

NYR host the NYI tonight. The Isles played and lost 3-2 to the Leafs last night and that loss has eliminated them from post season play. Let's hope they're feeling angry instead of tired.

Buffalo beat Ottawa 5-4 in OT last night and got a win that they needed badly. They went 3-7 on the PP. A loss would have made the game with us a lot more meaningful but, as it is, they have a 7 point lead on us and we have a game in hand on them.

Does it matter?

by youngflyerzfan

Honestly, if we fall lower in the conference, it would not bother me. First of all we have a better road record than home (although it would be embarrassing for the Rangers to win the division)so falling down wouldn't matter. Although we may play higher seeds such as Carolina, New York, or Ottawa; we play well against those teams. New York would be the biggest challenge becuase of Jagr, but we are 3-1 against Ottawa this year and Carolina has a shaky (although steady of late) young netminder in Martin Gerber. Point being, i would rather have Carolina, Ottawa, or New York than Buffalo who we are (i think) 0-4 against this year.

KH wants home ice advantage badly. Poor road teams like NJ, Montreal and Tampa would kill to start at home and not be road warriors. Like you suggested, it wouldn't be the end of the world to have to start on the road.
