This morning, I had a small freak mishap. I drove my daughter's car to take it to a shop because it keep quitting on her. During one of those quits at an intersection, I pushed her car to get it off the intersection and found myself unable to find the brake as I keep hitting on clutch instead.
Next I knew, the car bumped into a parked pickup truck on side of road. No damage to truck, WHEW,, but tiny damage to daughter's car, need new front plastic grill.
BUT,, I am ok, no owie.
When I got home, I realized something... why didn't the airbag goes off? Does it works at above certain speed or what?
Lee if you didn't hit it with a lot of impact I can see it not going off but if there was a fairly good impact it should have. If you hit it in the front and she has front air bags they should have worked. I'm glad for you they didn't because they can cause damage to your body but I see why you would be concerned for your daughter's safety. I think I would have it checked out. They have been know to be faulty at times.
Apparently, the SRS is supposed to go off at about 8 to 14mph if hitting a brick wall. A 14 mph barrier collision is equivalent to striking a parked car of similar size across the full front of each vehicle at about 28 mph. This is because the parked car absorbs some of the energy of the crash, and is pushed by the striking vehicle. If the car was at "walking speed", that was far below the 28 mph needed.
Now, for those who is wondering. Is my airbag working? If your Supplementary/Secondary Restraint System (SRS) lights turns on when you turn the ignition on and it eventaully turns off, then it is working. If it either stays on or never came on, it's bad.
Now my daughter is fuming at me cuz her plastic grill is broken, I told her, easy replacement, find the screw driver and go to junk yard LOL.
the air bag did not deploy. My friend who was in an accident, got hurt more by the airbag than the accident it'self.(she went off the road and hit some trees, totalled her car)
When we had our accident, we were stopped in traffic. The car behind us at an estimated 30 mph and pushed our car into the car in front of us. Over $8,000 damage but the airbag did not deploy. I asked the police officer about this when he was getting our statement from the accident. He indicated most airbags will not deploy unless there is over 10 to 20 mph of force at time of impact (apparently our car did not accelerate after impact to that degree). He also indicated some of the other statements in this thread that we could have been injured more from the airbag deployment than the impact we had. He also indicated the other car abosorbed the energy from our impact, etc. They actually fixed our car (seems to be running ok); the police officer and insurance rep. indicated for sure the car would have been totalled if the airbags deployed (very expensive to reset, etc.)

how is everyone? In the case of my mva, I was travelling about 50km/hour the other driver was doing the same speed for a total of at least 100km/hour...my airbags did not open!!! Strange but true, I'm glad they didnt tho, they make me nervous!
OMG Annie,, are you saying you had a head-on accident? yes, 50 plus 50 makes 100,,, it's amazing,, the more I read about air-bag, it had me worried and I should be blessed that it didn't on me.
When I had my accident, I hit a person who pulled out in front of me and I was going 50 at the time, but slammed on my brakes so I am not sure how fast I was going at time of impact, but the airbag DID go off, and boy oh boy am I ever glad it did. I wouldve been alot more messed up if it didnt. I wouldve broken bones or cut up my face from hitting the steering wheel or the windshield. I wasnt wearing a seatbelt at the time so I am very glad the airbag worked. My jaws were sore for a couple days from the impact, but that was all.
It was more of a side impact, from the beginning of the front fender all the way to the back...so police named it a side impact.
Everyone was surprised that the air bags didnt deploy, I remember it being an extremely hard hit tho!!! My son who was with me is hearring impaired wears hearring aids, he said that was sooo loud and the bang of my head hitting the side window!!! He didnt even have his hearring aids on at the time...funny tho I dont remember it being loud, just a sharp jolt.
LOL Annie, I can relate to your son! Even with hearing aid off, we can sense vibrations alot more than our hearing peers, hence, "it was loud". Ironic thing about yesterday's crash, I didn't wear my hearing aid and didn't hear anything but my daughter who was right behind (in my car) me said it was LOUD... but,,, no damage to pickup truck,, I guess it was a good thing that I didn't wear my hearing aid (cochlear implant).... whewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww.....
She is still pissed off at me over that grill!
I remember a while ago, you had concern about getting batteries for him. Did you ever found help?
Yes Lee we sure did get help for the batteries...a huge corporation in Halifax, which they wanted to remain anonymous, they bought him a year supply of batteries and get this, the latest technology in hearing aids for kids! A brand new set for 10 000 bucks!!!!
That was the nicest thing ever done for my son!!! Its hard to believe that a stranger would be that kind...I dont even know who it was! I'd like to though just to be able to thank them!!!
I too wondered why my air bags didnt go off in my accident. I was side swiped by a semi, and then after crashing into the center median and completely stopped, rearended by a suburban going 60-70mph. The trunk and most of the back seat was non-existent. I know I hit my head because I had a gash over my eye. There was enough impact, that a LARGE piece of glass was shoved way up in my ear into the eardrum. I would have thought that the airbags would have gone off even though the impact came from behind, I guess not.
